Travel Tips for Cloppenburg

Around the Museumsdorf

by Mariajoy

You will come across all kinds of different farm/rural buildings. There are three windmills here, this one is called "Kappenwindmuehle" and is situated near the restaurant.

Friendly locals

by Mariajoy

Being a rural museum there are of course lots of wagons and wagons need horses! The horses here are all black and all very friendly. Most of them had foals, like this lovely chap.

Backhaus (bakery)

by Mariajoy

This tiny timberframed building was in fact a bakery, selling a variety of "country" loaves for a couple of Euro each. All were made on the premises in their own oven (you can see it at the back of the building). The smell was divine!

Inside the houses

by Mariajoy

Inside the little country houses, visitors can see "how they used to live" - as everything has been carefully reconstructed, whether it was a lowly farmworker's dwelling or a rich manor house.

I found the little cupboard beds complete with fluffy duvets fascinating - there was no way they could ever lay out straight in their beds.. they were just too small... but as they were only cupboards they were very convenient space savers in those tiny cottages.
Many of the farm cottages were actually attached to stables or stalls for pigs/cattle etc which meant the animals could be attended to without the farmer and his wife having to go outside in bad weather.

Of course the buildings have been reconstructed exactly as they were which meant there was no lighting, and that made it difficult to take pictures in some places.

Announcing the arrival of a new baby???

by Mariajoy

I'm not sure what is going on here but we saw this washing line of baby clothes strung across a building (not a house - more like a warehouse) in a mostly residential street in Cloppenburg.

If anyone knows what its about, please let me know!

Update

...they probably just received a baby and friends put the washing line up. That's a local custom

Thanks to HORSCHECK for this info :)
