From what I understood with my limited German, the giant car manufacturers in Wolfsburg have bought vast areas of undeveloped land around the Gifhorn area, for the purpose of creating a suitable natural habitat to encourage various flora and fauna.
We visited the Ilkerbruch haven and were able to see nesting white storks, and other birds, as well as wild ponies (which have been reintroduced) and deer and buffalo. Don't forget your binoculars!!!!
As well as an observation platform, there is a bird-watching cabin here which is very busy with twitchers - go in quietly!! Their photographic equipment is enviable and there are albums in the cabin displaying their stunning photography.
