How to get to Goettingen

by Poetadipraga

I have to go to Goettingen to meet a friend, and I thought about the chance of flying to berlin Shonefeld, and take a train to goetting, or fly to Hannover and take a train for goettingen from there..
I know that Hannover is much closer than Berlin, but the tickets to Hannover cost double.
Is the airport of Berlin very far from the railway station? Is it so long to get to goetting by train?
Thanx in advance

Teo

hallo,
you can go by S-Bahn from Airport to the city- maybe Berlin-Ostbahnhof or Berlin-Zoologischer Garten.
it is `nt so far. appr. 20-25 min.
How long do you go to goettingen- i dont know. you can look at www.bahn.de- they will show you all the plans and times.
bye sabse

If you take the ICE train it's 2hrs15 min to Göttingen from Berlin. Make sure you book the the train tickets at least 3 days in advance to safe some money. If you're staying over the weekend it's 50% off, otherwise 25%.
You can book all those fares online and print the ticket yourself. As already mentioned the site is www.bahn.de

Hi,
no matter where you fly in, there will be some typical "hassle" concerned with the connection to the main railway station. This is always so for first-time visitors. But do not worry. Regardless of the city, confusion will be almost the same, so decide to take the least expensive flight (seems to be Berlin). However the normal train ticket (one-way; 2nd class without any reductions) from Berlin-Schoenefeld will be 64 EUROs and takes roughly 3hrs, from Hannover Langenhagen (airport) to Goettingen the train ticket will be 30 EUROs and the transport will take about 1 hr, 10 min.

Regards from Goettingen
Bobek

PS: If you like too book the train online in advance, you can get a reduction (I think 25%), yet I would not do it (in fact I never booked a train online) because it menas even more hassle... ;-)

Just wanting to add that indeed Hannover airport is not that well connected to the railway network either -- you have to take a tram or a bus to the city center. It's not that far out as Schönefeld, but still... the ICE connection Berlin-Göttingen more expensive, but considering the distance covered, it is lightning fast!

I agree -- go for Berlin!

Hi Rhine Roll..this is no longer right, sorry as the airport is now connected by the S-Bahn. which brings you to the main station in about fifteen minutes. You no longer need to take the bus....

Greetings,
Bigs

But this is the green-coloured "tram" I was mentioning -- or is there a real railway station (Bahnhof) at the airport, like in Düsseldorf or Cologne or Frankfurt?

RE: RE: How to get to Goettingen

It´s a real railway station, with an own line connecting to the main station...not the green tram anymore :)

wow! I am impressed!

I guess for deciding this it is not really important whether it's a tram to Hannover Hauptbahnhof or an S-Bahn. Whatever way you look at it, the Berlin connection costs about 35 EUR more for the train ticket and might take some 2 hours longer to get from the airport to Göttingen. Everything else is pretty much similar for both alternatives!

Travel Tips for Göttingen

Luxurious Swimming Pool

by RhineRoll

The Badeparadies ("bathing paradise") Eiswiese is an extremly popular swimming pool and a lot more than that -- it's a complete leisure complex Disabled Access -- There's restrooms and special locker rooms. No hoist into the wather, though.

Germany At its Best

by RhineRoll

I quite honestly believe that Goettingen is the nicest place to live in Germany. About the only thing Goettingen lacks is a beach -- well I guess you can't have everything! Apart from not being situated close to an ocean, Goettingen is a wonderful charming university town in the middle of Germany. Everybody meets in the pedestrianised old town which is basically one big shopping mall and at nighttime turns into a equally lively party zone. I miss it a lot.
