Travel Tips for Goslar

Harz II

by zizkov

Middle of Hahnenklee with hotels round central lake. If you view closely, the cablecar is through the forest to the left of the fountain. There is a wooden viewing tower at the top which, I think, may be the highest place in the Harz.

Market Square / "Golden Eagle"

by MichaelFalk1969

The central market square of Goslar is surrounded by beautiful historic buildings, such as the Old Town Hall, the "Kämmereigebäude" and the "Kaiserwörth". In the center the historic well (dating back to the 11th century) is crowned by the symbol of Goslar, a golden eagle. Close to the market square is a smaller, yet also pretty square, the "Schuhhof".

Goslar - a historic mining town

by MichaelFalk1969

Goslar in Lower Saxony is today a quiet provincial city, but in the Middle Ages it had much greater historic significance.

Once it was a rich mining and trading town, later a member of the Hanseatic League, and even Emperors coveted the posession of this place. The medieval conflict between Emperor Friedrich "Barbarossa" and Duke Henry "the Lion" of Saxony escalated when Henry demanded Goslar for the continued support of the Emperor.

The many preserved historic buildings in the city testify the wealth of the Goslar patricians. Even economic history was written in Goslar, as the historic home of the Siemens family ("Siemenshaus") stands here.

Some Informations about GOSLAR!!Taken from "Deutsche Fachwerkstraße"

The imperial City of Goslar has a history of more than 1000 years. The oval city centre was constructed within the small space of one squere kilometer. On entering the city by car, visitors should follow the arrow-signs which mark the way to a big car park near the imperial palatine(Kaiserpfalz). Getting out of your car there, you may have a splendid first view of the mighty Romanesque palatine.

The Rammelsberg with a height of more than 600m and a silver mine disused only since 1988,forms a noticeable natural backdrop to the building. The mine and the historic city centre are part of the Cultural and Natural Heritage of Mankind proclaimed by the UNESCO in 1992.

It may have been the discovery of the first veins of silver which led the Saxon and Salic emperors to the construction of their biggest and safest palatine here. For centuries, it was the favourite seat of power in the north of Germany. At the same time, a centre of Christianity came into beeing here and the city was therefore called "Rome of the North".

At that time , the tower of 47 churches and chaples dominated the townscape. To this day,the view from the high palatine over the city with its five big parish churches is impressive.

The walk to the small city centre is one of short ways. The High Way (Hoher Weg) leads to an old hospice(Großes Heiliges Kreuz) which was transformed into an exemplary social foundation in medieval times. Passing the high way, the visitor gets into the city centre and reaches a medieval market place with a Gothic town hall. The many narrow and still cobblestoned lanes in which every house tells its own story are adventurous to walk: secret corners are waiting to be discovered.
