Language problems?

by mtandon

Hello,

I am sort of baffled about the exact level of understanding of German required in Hannover. While some people have told me, english is well-understood and spoken, others seem to believe that survival is tough without the knowledge of German.

Thanks!

Re: Language problems?

I have travelled to Germany twice and have had no problems whatsoever due to not knowing to speak the local language.Of course it would be more convinient if you know German, but many understand English and the Germans are very systematic and you would be able to help yourself if you have a map, timetable of trains etc..I have always found the German people very helpful and friendly.
Just go ahead and have a good trip,
Vpas

I too have never had any problems in Germany (or anywhere else I've travelled). Many Germans do have good English, but even if they don't they will (like people everywhere) do their best to help you. Most officials (e.g. in railway stations and so on) know English.

However, it is courteous to learn at least a few basics before you visit any country: please, thank you, how much, where, sorry etc, and numbers to ten.

Take a small phrasebook with you, for understanding notices/menus and so on. You can also use it if you are having problems communicating.

It's a difference if you are a tourist or if are going to live in Germany. As a tourist, staying in hotels etc, dealing with people in train stations, airports or employees at tourist sites, you won't have any problem speaking English.
If you want to live there, get work and rent an apartment, you should speak some German at least, or you'll run into problems.

Forum des Landesmuseum

by nepalgoods

The Forum belongs to our Regional Museum. It is conveniantly located directly opposite the Market Church. In the beautifull 19th century hall are special exhibitions displayed. Just now (2004) there is an impressive exhibition about Oetzi - the Iceman. Oetzi is an about 5000 year old mummy, which was found in the Tirolian Alps some years ago. Latest findings about how Oetzi lived, how he died and where he came from are explained.

Bavaria again?

by bonio about Bavarium

Spotted this city centre restaurant on our travels ans thought it was a likely lunch stop! Typically Bavarian menu and beer from Löwenbräu with a beer garden so all was well.
Enjoyed our short visit here.

Herrenhausen Gardens

by elgin99

One of the describes:
The royal gardens of Herrenhausen are a real treat for visitors to the state capital. These unique gardens were created in 1666. You can enjoy a variety of stylistic orientations, baroque horticulture in the French style, the English landscaped garden and the botanical garden. The Großer Garten, Berggarten, Georgengarten and Welfengarten were laid out by the kings and princes of Hanover between the 17th and 19th centuries.

The centrepiece of the ensemble is the Großer Garten, the largest baroque gardens in Germany, with its hedges, secret garden, impressive fountains and white sculptures. In the summer months, grand celebrations are held here – visitors can enjoy the baroque ambience of the garden with events ranging from the international firework competition to the "Kleine Fest im Großen Garten“ (little festival in the Großer Garten) to theatre and musical performances.
