Rental car in Hannover...
by sailornappo
Hello from Canada (via Portugal),
Planning to spend 10 days from just before X-mas until after New years in and around Hannover and would like to rent a car for this time.
If anyone has some leads for inexpensive rentals of a smaller economy car (Diesel if a choice) it would be very helpful.
Also am thinking of spending a couple days in Hamburg, hopefully to be able and still get some tickets (2) for the "Mamma MIa" musical. Again, any info or tips for this trip (Tickets, accomodation etc.) is most welcome.
Perhaps there are organized bus or train trips available to see things in and around Hamburg starting from Hannover and return??
This is a first trip for my brasilian girlfriend who has never seen snow to Germany, so any tips that may fit into our travels are most appreciated.
Thank you all, Norbert

I can't help about rental cars, but why do you need organised tours from Hannover? It's only a little more than one hour by train from Hamburg so you can take the next train (they run about 2-3 times per hour) and start there. I recommend getting the harbour boat tour that starts from the Landungsbrücken station (subway stop of the same name). But it won't be very comfortable (chilly, foggy, windy) in winter.
If you want to show your girlfriend snow, chances are you will have to head to Harz mountains. You can get there by car or by train - there is a steam rail line (regular, not just amuseum one) up to the top of the Brocken, where there will be a lot of snow in winter (it's quite above 1000 m).

Thanks for the tips. I myself grew up in Hannover, so know it well and still have my german licence, no problem there. The main reason going to Hamburg is to see the musical Mammamia" if we still get tickets for it, and then of course once there may as well do a few things.
Thanks again, Norbert

If you can rent and return in Hannover
http://www.interrent.com
would be an option. No more their cheapest rate for December - but still cheap. Not a Diesel - but with these rates ...
A cheap option by train is the Lower Saxony-Ticket (Niedersachsen-Ticket).
Covers all local trains (S-Bahn, RB, RE, ME) in the state Lower Saxony and Hamburg and Dresden. Furthermore all local public transport (trams, buses) in Hannover and Hamburg. On weekdays however it's valid only past 9am.
Lower Saxony Ticket Single (1 person) EUR 17,00
Lower Saxony Ticket (2-5 persons) EUR 24,00

If you plan to use the Lower Saxony-Ticket select as means of transport "only local transport".

Bremen is indeed correct - not Dresden.

You'll find the offer of Sixt that Joe already mentioned on this website:
www.sixti.com
But if you plan to go long distances compare their offer with other rental car companies. The kilometers are limited.

Thanks again for your info.
I also found a car-rental comp. with branches in many places and reasonable rates, like 14 days, incl. 4200 km ( or 300 km/day) for a VW Golf for about 265.00 EU

Now I only need to find a nice but affordable place in the harz and the travel can begin :-))

Travel Tips for Hannover
Whitsun/Pentecost
by nepalgoods
Whitsun in Germany is a big holiday with a free monday. In Hannover this holiday is one highlight of all our summer festivals. There is Fest der Altstadt - a big party in the Old Town with, music, dancing and a lot of fun.
And there is "Tummelplatz der L?ste", a big festival of gay and lesbian people from Hannover and elsewhere. They dress up specially for this party and you can see a lot of strange people then. Many of my friends are gay and all together we have a lot of fun.
Some years there is also a big Dragon-Boat race on Maschsee and some other minor parties ...
For the actual programme you can have a look on the website mentioned below.
About Hannover's nightlife
by sabsi about Not existant?!
Well we do have a lot of nice bars, restaurants and pubs here.... some of them I will show you on this page. But still Hannover isn't a nightlife city. There is no place that I like to go dancing, (Makes me feel old), huge parties in town mostly are terribly boring, the certain something is missing. But new bars and pubs open every month and some of them are great!
Something for everybody....
by Mirja about Das Ei (The Egg)
"Das Ei" is a small bar in a part of Hannover where lots of students live. It has room for about 60 people. The menu has food for all different tastes and it is quite reasonable. They have some really large tables so it's a nice place to go, when you are with a big group (be sure to make a reservation!). "Batamog"!!!! Yummy!!!! It is fried potatoes with two small steaks. But the best thing about this dish is the sauce. It is creamy and spicy sauce bernaise (with sambal olek). Try it, you'll like it!!
the new town hall
by Lucky79
Many visitors are quite astonished to hear that the magnificent building they are standing in front of is, actually, the "new" townhall. Its size and grand architectural style make it look more "historical", like a relict from more majestic times, when Hannover used to be a kingdom. The townhall itself was, however, ceremonially opende on 20 June 1913 after twelfe years building time. The proud figure of 10 million Marks was the amount the municipality was willing to pay for its new splendid building, erected upon 6020 beech-tree piles. It was designed by Eggert and Halmhuber.
The new townhall is the residence of the mayor, the head of the municipal administration. The doors of the Townhall are always wide open to all visitors. And a visit is any time a worthwhile venture.
Four scale models of Hannover are on permanent display under the nearly one hundred metre high dome of the townhall lobby, showing the city as it was in the Middle Ages, before World War II, the destruction of 1945 and the townscape of today. These models are always immensely popular amongst the visitors.
The diagonal lift in the Townhall dome is unique in Europe. At a 15-degree angle it covers the 43 metres up tolthe gallery at the top of the dome. From this vantage point one can enjoy a marvellous view of the whole city, even as far as the Harz Mountains when visibility is good.
Zoo Hannover
by Bigs
I really love this zoo and I would say that it´s one of the best in Europe. Most animals are kept in large exhibits.... A great attraction is a boat trip on the Sambesi.......you can watch the African animals from a boat. There is an Indian temple, which is the home for the elephants and tiger and the is a typical farm with cows and pigs for the city kids!!! Their products are served in the zoo´s restaurant "Meyer´s Hof". Excellent kitchen!
The entrance fee is quite high, but it´s worth it.......all animal have a better life through that...
