Travelling/Staying to Hannover

by rushtoajay

Dear All,
I'm from India, and I will be travelling to hannover shortly ,infact will be living and working in hannover for 7-8 months.

My question is :
1)Are there any discrimination in Hannover since I dont have a white skin?
2)Do people in hannover understand english , maily at work ?
3)As a foreigner in Hannover , any suggestions/inputs that any one would like to share?

Expecting your reply.

God Bless you .

Thanks in advance,
Ajay

1) discrimination:
Hannover is a large city, also a state capital, well used to visitors from all over the world. If this is your first time in Germnay, you'll be surprised how many non-Germans you'll see. I have been told many times by tourists that they had exspected everybody to be blond and blue-eyed and were very surprised at the reality. Discrimination is very unlikely. However, there are racists in every country in the world and there is no guarantee you won't meet one.

2) Do people at work understand English? That depends entirely on where you work. If you're working at the university, the answer is yes, people there will speak English. Any international company, the same. A small company , no,not really.

3) Since I'm German, I cannot answer this question.

So glad I found this site. My family is moving from Houston to Hannover this summer with a teenage daughter. What is life in Hannover like? Anyone know about the International School of Hannover? We lived in Malaysia for 3 years so International moves are nothing new. We enjoy learning/living a new culture. What is housing like? Is there plenty of outdoor recreation?

It will be better if you ask your question in a new posting, as someone who might know about the international school won't know about your question if you hide it in this thread.

Travel Tips for Hannover

Universtiy of Hannover

by chancay

Formally built as summer palace of the King of Hannover. This is know the main building of the university of Hannover. In various halls of the building are now auditoriums for the students. The building has still its old flair.

Ricklingen

by nepalgoods

Ricklingen is a suburb of Hannover. It has been a village at the country side, but is now part of Hannover with some old farmhouses left.
These old houses are not longer inhabited by farmers but by modern people who renovate the houses so that old and new elements are combined. This house is built in 1771. Where the big gate had been for the field machines are now modern windows.

sabsi was a wonderful host and generous new friend. She picked us up our hotel on our last day with her 'green machine' and showed us around Hannover in style! Then she dropped us at the train station to catch our train back to Frankfurt.

Have had a very good lunch with my family in this "ristorante". High quality dishes, ambience and service! The restaurant is placed next to the river Leine at one end of the old town of Hannover. It is a restaurant where several politicans from the government building nearby are used to eat and our now chancellor (before premier of lower saxony) has been seen as well.

Funniest event was that I just told my family about it when chancellor Schröder passed by the restaurant in real! He did not come in but we saw him passing by with his bodyguards. I had "Panzerotti filled with salmon", very delicious! The fish plate looked really yummy as well as all the other pasta dishes we had.

We went to the Kestner museum to pass time while waiting to go to the top of the Rathaus. What a strange little eclectic place this is. It has historical objects, modern art and let's just say some interesting porcelain pieces...

Oh well....traveling IS about exploring.
