Moving to Hannover

by redreign

I am moving to Hannover in July for my new job (from America). I was wondering if anyone could give me some ideas on finding an apartment. I am in my early 20s and want to live near an exciting area. I am curious what part of the city I should live in and especially where NOT to live. Thanks for your help! Any other things that I should know before moving there would also be extremely helpful. Thanks!

has a map which shows the how attractive the different locations of Hannover are

sehr gute Lage = very good location
gut Lage = good location
mittle Lage = average location
einfache Lage = basic location

In your case I would look for something central.
Normally quite a number of offers can be found in the net. But often the ones which can be found most easily are not the ones with the best offers.
Most offers can be normally found in local newspapers. But as I'm not from Hannover I cannot help you on this in detail.

Hiya!

Try Nordstadt or Linden Nord for multicultural student areas. Oststadt or List are a bit more upscale but also very popular and probably most beautiful. Südstadt is near the lake and quite nice but also not very lively.

In the city centre and around it there aren't really areas to avoid. However, the outskirts might get a bit rough.

If you need any help, please let me know. I am a native Hannoveraner and know the city well enough to know where to go/where not to go.

Hope this helps!

I would recommend to move to the "List"! It's a very nice part of Hannover, and it's also very central!

Best wishes from Hannover,
Rene :-)

Hi!

you can find infos for apartments as well on the homepage of the university, offically they are for students, but everyone else can ask for them as well. Have a look at this list (unfortuantely still only in german):

besides there is the following page:

if you need any help, you can just ask me.

good luck

Travel Tips for Hannover

Markthalle - Markethall

by nepalgoods

I am not quite sure, where to put this tip about Markthalle. It could be a restaurant- tip, as many people go there to eat the fresh food, which many stalls offer.

It could be a shopping-tip, as the market hall has many stalls with fresh fruits, vegetables, fish and meat. If you look for exotic fruits or special meat for cooking, than you are in the right place!

It could be a local custom-tips, as many people in Hannover like to go here frequently to meet people, drink a glas of vine after visiting the Fleemarket.

!Viva Mexico!

by Mirja about Sausalitos

This is a crazy place!!! It is loud and crowded, but still a great place to go on Friday nights. Especially if you are looking for a place to start with in the evening. You have all sorts of fresh mexican food (Burritos, Enchiladas, Tacos,....). The servings are huge. I once ordered a baked potatoe and I got a plate with two potatoe, chili on top and everything was covered with melted cheese. YUMMY!!! The Sausalitos is not a place to go for the first date. You'd be yelling at each other the whole time, since it is quite noisy. Be sure to be there at 11 p.m.! They start the Margarita Happy Hour, so a pitcher of strawberry-margarita costs EUR 7,50 then!!!! Casual - Especially on the weekend lots of people are dressed up, because they plan to go to a club later in the night.

Not only Gyros and Zaziki!

by Bigs about Kytaro

Styled in the typical greek style. There is also a nice beergarden at the back of the house.......

Inside it can get quite loud when it´s crowded...... Better reserve a table when coming after 8 pm.... it´s often crowded! It´s the Chicken Suflaki, the meat is so soft you even wouldn´t need teeth for it!!! It´s served with sliced potatoes...... For a starter you can fill your salad bowl from the selfcatering buffet! It´s all very fresh and yummy!

Town Hall

by Bigs

This is the place I show my guests at first. The town hall has two great possibilities to learn something about Hannover. First you can go up the town hall tower and have a look over the city and the Lake "Maschsee" nearby. I really like the views from there. When you are going down again you will find four tables in the huge hall inside which are showing Hannover in a modell. One model is from 16.. something, one before the second world war and one after...... The last one is a present look on Hannover. Most guests are shocked, when they see, that nearly all buildings in the city center were destroyed in WWII....

Palace of Welfen and Saxon Horse

by elgin99

1717 built, became the place of residence of the count Platen, "castle Monbrillant", to the north of the manor houses' avenue on the area of today's Guelph garden.

The castle was torn off 1857. The Welfenschloss resulted for Tramm. 1879 retracted the technical university, today's university, into the building. In front of the castle stands emblem of the country formed this for Lower Saxony, the Saxon horse, of Friedrich Wolf.

The garden of the old castle Monbrillant was a little copy of the Big Garden.

After its building for King Georg V. in the 19th century this castle has housed a central administration place more than one hundred years since now and is located in hugging Hanover's near the Royal Gardens.
