Christmas in Hannover
by Leipzig
The Christmas Market in Hannover is located in the streets and market squares in the centre. Here you find wodden toy, gingerbread, almonds and Glühwein (spiced red wine) as well as some ideas for last minutes Christmas gift.
Also worth to see is the Finnish Market at ballhof Square.

Traditional German fare in Hannover
by SWFC_Fan about Alt Deutsche Bierstube
I ate at Alt Deutsche Bierstube one lunchtime during a visit to Hannover in November 2007.
This traditional German restaurant and bar is located in the shadows of the huge Marktkirche church, on Kobelingerstrasse, just off the main street of Karmarschstrasse.
On a cold November afternoon, I was glad of the warm, cosy ambiance (dim light, candlelit tables and a well heated dining room) of the restaurant’s interior and the selection of warming dishes on the extensive menu!
At the time of my visit, the menu featured a selection of winter specialities. I was tempted to try the “spare ribs, sausages and kale” (the latter, I have since discovered, being a type of cabbage), but opted instead for a turkey dish (see below). As well as the winter specialities, the menu featured a number of local dishes including sauerkraut, pork knuckle, sausages and various beef and pork steaks and stews, and seafood dishes.
The menu was largely in German, with brief English translations below each dish. The warm and friendly waitress spoke English perfectly. I opted for:
Cream of Potato Soup - Cost: 4.40 Euros
A tasty bowl of creamy potato soup, with croutons and a slice of crusty bread. Perfect on a cold winter’s day.
Turkey in White Wine Sauce - Cost: 10.30 Euros
I wasn’t really sure what to expect, but I thought it’d be slices of turkey in a thin, wine sauce. Instead, this was more of a stir fry dish with diced turkey, sugar peas, broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, “schupfnudeln”, onions, peppers and tomatoes in a rich white wine sauce. I’d never tried schupfnudeln before (nor heard of them for that matter!), but these “potato noodles” were an enjoyable part of this dish.
A Gilde Ratskeller beer - Cost: 3.00 Euros
Traditional German cuisine in a warm, cosy, friendly restaurant. Recommended!

Flea Market at the Leine River
by Typ88
Only a few steps from the Old Town is the Leine river. It's a really idyllic river, meandering through the town. Along the river, there is a huge flea market every Saturday, which is known far behind the borders of Hannover. People come from all over Lower Saxony to go to the flea market on Saturday morning.
