sidetrips from Hannover

by AnnLAdams

My son is traveling to Hannover on business. Someone suggested he take a weekend trip to Prague or Amsterdam. Does anyone have information on transportation to either city? Would train or car be better, and how long would it take to get to either one? I was hoping Hannover would be close enough to Rothenburg, the Black Forest, and/or the Alps, as those are all places I've been to and would recommend. However, in looking at maps, I don't know if it would be very possible in a weekend to make those trips worthwhile. Any information on this would be appreciated. Thanks. Ann

German railway: www.bahn.de
You can calculate distances by using www.viamichelin.com
Rothenburg or Amsterdam are similar in distance.
Prague could be just doable.

Personally I've done many weekend trips in Europe with these kind of distances. Provided your weekend is Friday-Sunday (3 days).

Whatabout Berlin and Hamburg. Closer = cheaper and more time for sightseeing.

Rothenburg, Black Forest and the Alps are also quite far for a weekend trip.

But the Harz Mountains with towns like Goslar, Wernigerode and Quedlinburg are also well worth a visit.

Travel Tips for Hannover

Art

by nepalgoods

Hannover is full of art work, sculptures and interesting modern buildings. Sculptures can be as colorful and beautiful as the Nanas of Niki de St Phalle or as ugly as a heap of junk. But is always worth to explore the city for all the old and new sculptures!

Döhrener Turm

by nepalgoods

In the Middle Ages Hannover like all cities in Germany had a city wall. Outside of the wall were the fields of the farmers and a forest, which is today the city forest. In this city forest were more fortifications, which were specially helpful during the long war in the beginning of the 17th century.

The Döhrener Turm was first mentioned in 1371 as part of the fortifications. When you walk in the city forest, you can still see ditches and low earthen walls, which are remains of this old fortifications.

The Döhrener Turm can be reached by tram no 1, 2 or 8, station "Döhrener Turm"

To the Fairground

by nepalgoods

Tram No. 8 goes from the train sation to Hannover Fair Nord and Tram No. 16 goes to Hannover Fair East. For any fair it is the best to take No. 8. In the train station you get any informations you need. There are also displays in the stations and announcements.

Bolero Restaurant and Cocktailbar

by chancay about Bolero Hannover

Bolero is a chain restaurant that also exists in Hamburg and Bremen as far as I know. it offers a big variety of Cocktails at a really big special cocktail bar and a good mainly mexican food. There are different "happy hours", means time when some drinks are offered for special prices, as e.g. Frozen Magaritas every day from I think 23:00h on. Mai Tai ...LOL

The Rainforst house

by chancay

As another exciting event for the EXPO 2000 a Rain forest house was built in the Berggarten. There you´´ll find a absolutley tropical atmosphere with all its vegetation and fauna. Besides there are some very toxic frogs, fortunately behind thick bulletproof glass.
