Convenience Stores?

by mtandon

Hello All,

I was wondering about the name(s) of the most common convenience stores in Hannover and Germany? Is it one big supermarket which is wholesale or there are smaller stores all over the city?

Thanks!

Mansi

Both. There are supermarket chains (not so "super" if you happen to be from the U.S. - think one-fourth or fifth the size of a Wal Mart) and smaller convenience stores. Even smaller are kiosks that sell sweets, newspaper and tobaccos.
Supermarkets can be found in resident areas, smaller and more expensive convenience stores, as well as kiosks pretty much all across Hannover (or Munich or Berlin), even at some tourist hot spots where rents are too high for supermarkets to stay profitable.

I wouldn't say there's such a thing like "the most common convenience store" in Germany.

But since you ask for names, well-known cheap German supermarket chains (not necessarily representative) are Aldi and Lidl.

If you are thinking of Seveneleven stores, 24 hours open, the only thing of this sort in Germany would be petrol station stores.

Not sure about Hannover, but there are convenience stores in Berlin that open from 9a.m. to 2a.m.

Travel Tips for Hannover

Bahnhofstr.

by Kajser-MK

This is a pedestrian street only , with numerous shops and it has two levels. Lower level is in the basement and called "Passarele" . This street is just leading from the central station exactly into center of the city, and it is a shoping paradise in fact. At the end Bahnhofstrase meets "Kropce" -central railway station (underground) in Hannover.

German artchitecture is a good example of what to do in other countries. LEt's remember that after WW II they had to reconstruct the whole country and in a few years they have become the example to follow in terms of arechitecture.

Busstopsign

by nepalgoods

This is a typical sign for a busstop in Hannover. The "H" means "Haltestelle", that is "Busstop" in German. Beneath you find an explanation of the prices and then the timetable.
Not far from my former home is this busstop, where a bus to Mehrum starts. My boyfriend (wow! times are changing: he is now my husband!) and I wondered for months, what Mehrum looks like. Finally we bought two tickets to Mehrum. Please see my Mehrum-page for more!

Restaurant and bar in the old townhall

by chancay about Atrium

This bar formally known as Patio is as well known for a quite good kitchen. Even cancellor Schröder has been seen there drinking a Weizenbeer. In Summer they have tables outside as well next to the market church.

Hannover's beautiful Old Town

by garridogal

Since I didn't get to spend a lot of time in Hannover, I'm happy that the time spent there was in Old Town. We'd had a drink in this part of town the night before and then, after the Rathaus, went back to look around and have a snack.

Does anyone know what the red line that goes through it, is for? Made me think of the Freedom Trail in Boston...
