On the 22nd March 1945 the building was demolished due to bombing raids and only a very modest Hall was rebuilt. However, in the late eighties the Rathaus was rebuilt according to its original plans. The structure was once considered to be one of the most beautiful half-timbered buildings in Germany.
The fountain in front of the Rathaus, the Marktbrunnen, was the only thing in the modern markt that survived the bombings.
