S-Bahn Hildesheim to Hannover?
Aloha!
During October I am planning to visit friends in Hildesheim and Hannover. I am trying to decide whether to stay part time in Hildesheim and part time in Hannover or to stay in Hildesheim for the entire time and take a bus/S-Bahn to Hannover for a day trip.
If there is an S-Bahn connection, how much does it cost? I have also posted the same enquiry on the Hannover Forum.

Tickets sell for 6.90, but there may be discounted day passes available as well.

If you ask me, I would stay in Hannover and not in Hildesheim - except you have free loging with your friends. Hildesheim is not the must-have-seen city. They have a huge church, also a good museum (www.rpmuseum.de) but that's it. OK, maybe the market place with redone medivial frame worked houses, and a big lake... And time with you friends might be worth staying.
Also Hannover is not the best touristic city. Of course much bigger than HI, and better cultural offers.
You might consider a trip to Hamburg from Hannover. It is not that far and really worth a visit. The cheaper train connection with reginal trains should be around 25 Euros one way, or you might consider the Niedersachsen ticket or weekend ticket with the train.

The Pick-a-back statue is a legendary figure from Hildesheim. Created in 1905 it is the personification of a bad conscience. It was one of the few things in Hildesheim that escaped unscathed from the bombings in WW2.

I saw a great exhibition there lately: Press Photography of the 20th century. It's very good but it'll only be there until 3 February 2002!
The 'normal' museums shoes exhibits from Ancient Egypt and Peru - including the impressive rebuilt of an Egyptian grave!
You like city views??
If you are feeling up to braving the 364 steps to the top of St Andreas Church than you will be rewarded with some stunning 360 degree views of Hildesheim (only through plastic though unfortunately). There are also some helpful directional indicators present.
There is a lower viewing platform about halfway with a telescope and for the small price of 50 cents you can make the church's bell ring on the way up.
There was some renovation on both the interior and exterior of the cwhen I visited in October, 2004 but fortunately this does not affect the stunning views.
Entry to the tower will set you back about 1.50 Euro.
