Memorial of Franz von Dingelstedt

by MD2nd

In the yard of the restaurant's Altes Zollhaus, Hauptstrasse 5, Rinteln, 31737, is located a memorial of the German poet, dramatist and theatre administrator Franz von Dingelstedt (June 30, 1814 – May 15, 1881) as he right there created his famous *ballad of the Weser river.

The book by which Franz von Dingelstedt is best remembered is "Lieder eines kosmopolitischen Nachtwaechters" (Songs of a cosmopolitan nightguard). These poems show bitter opposition to everything that savours of despotism. In 1841 he married Bohemian opera singer, Jenny Lutzer (1816-1877).

Franz von Dingelstedt especially distinguished himself by presenting all Shakespeare's historical plays upon the stage (Weimar) in an unbroken cycle. In 1867 he became director of the court opera house in Vienna, and in 1872 of the Hofburgtheater, a position which he held until his death on May 15, 1881.

DAS WESERLIED

Hier hab' ich so manches liebe Mal
mit meiner Laute gesessen,
hinunterblickend ins weite Tal

begruessten mich nickende Traeume.

Welcome to RINTELN

by Leipzig

Rinteln is situated in the Weserbergland region, half way between Hannover and Bielefeld. The town attracts visitors with beautifully restored half-timbered and Weserrenaissance buildings. Rinteln was founded around 1150 and received the city right in 1239. In the same year the city fortification was built. In 1806 Napoleon razed the walls and two years later the Westphalian King Jerôme transfered the university to Marburg.
