Lovely district Todenmann (sounds like dead man)
by MD2nd
The origin of the strange name of Rinteln's district Todenmann (dead man) is not known. Assumptions are, the name might be related to the shut down of the former local coal mine many years back. Rinteln's suburbs with the village of Todenmann (among others) is the latest founded village (16th century) which earlier, was not more than a cluster of farms. There for one can imagine how lovely this area still is: many cherry trees are planted along the hilly roads up to the woods. Beautiful paths for walking, hiking, taking rests in between, and enjoying the view down on the town of Rinteln, its area and the Weser river!

Schaumburg castle
by Margrette
"A small castle on a top of a hill"
Traveling through germany I had an opportunity to see very nice old castle placed around 12 km from small town Rinteln and only 40 km from Hannover. It was pure coincidence, just a small atraction on a way. But I am very satisfied with this short tour.
We had to ride up through forest by a narrow path. It is very calm and idyllic location, peacefull and quiet. There are almost no people around and we have explored this mystic place by ourselves, just two people. No other tourists.
The castle is placed on a hill named Nesselberg. It was build in 1220 and later on rebuild in a year 1534-44year ....still standing. In a XVI century it was a home of a count Schaumburg. It is not the biggest ....more like the smallest I've ever seen:)))) but it does have a special atmosphere to it, not mensioning all the area. you can easily take a walk through the forest and get some fresh air....just get some rest.
When you will pass the gate you will see the tower reaching the clouds. There is a path leding up to the main yard, just next to a tower. It is very green place, gardens around, little bit unkempt though.
Yard is not very big but there is quite nice terrace. you can see spectacular view from it.
The very nice thing was that we could enter the tower and go up the stairs to the very top. Next to the entrance there was a small box where we could put in some money (2 Euro or "as you please") We could take a look around just like the ancestors did in XIII century. Everything looks so natural, I felt like I took a trip back in time.
Inside the tower there are just wooden stairs and narrow windows or rather I should call it holes in a wall. It is not beautifull....it is more kind of a spooky place, but that is what i liked about it.
The view from a tower....you can see everything
The Schaumburg castle is very nice place to visit. Mostly because it is not well known and there are no tourists around. The castle seems to be so real not like some typical tourist places like other big and famous castles. It has its own charm and you can feel the heavy history in a smell of an old stone.... well ,some parts probably were renovated but the idea of its spirit stays....
If you like the place you can stay for a night:) there are rooms that can be booked. There is also a restaurant and hotel placed just opposite the castle.
So if you by some chance will find yourself near by, you can take a short tour to see the Schaumburgcastle.
