Travel Tips for Wolfsburg

Fallersleben village

by Sjalen

Fallersleben is a nice old village just outside town (there are local buses) with Wolfgang von Fallersleben's birth house (the man who wrote Deutschland, Deutschland which you can see written in gold on the woodwork) as in the picture. The village also has a wonderful brewery in an old farmhouse (see tip). The warm pretzels are to die for and the beer won't disappoint!

Wolfsburg, home of VW

"Visit to Autostadt and VW Museum"

Wolfsburg is a relatively young town compared with many of those we visited on our 10-day trip.

Founded on a green field site in 1938 it developed from a worker settlement for those who worked producing the car into a modern city and came to be known as Wolfsburg in 1945 - named after the 700 year old Wolfsburg castle.

We only had one day and night in Wolfsburg and that was taken up by the visit to Autostadt, a tour round the VW factory and a trip to the VW museum.

I had really wanted to get into the castle but we didn't have enough time.

Please have a read of my Germany Travelogue which is a diary of our 10-day road trip

WOB with children

by Sjalen

"Autostadt"

Of course this huge complex has something for children too. As already written in the main text, they love sliding around the glass floor in the entrance and they are amused by the science centre in the car exhibition tower. However, they also have their own little "Rundfahr Land" here, where you can even leave them under supervision (you get a beeper!) and they can drive pedalo cars, play board games and draw.

"Badeland"

When I was little and visited, this was THE place to go or my trip had been a waste! The outdoor pool and wave pool were amazing for their day and we had nothing like it in Sweden then. Since that time, Badeland suffered a fire but luckily, it is such a Wolfsburg institution that it was soon rebuilt. We were there during our last visit to see the news and it had become even better with two thrilling water slides and a pool with currents swirling you along a path. :)))

"Essehof"

One of the more popular summer outings is to Essehof Zoo and park on the way to Braunschweig. http://www.tierpark-essehof.de/
