Location of Auto Museum

by Mcmon30

We are from Australia and have a great interest in old cars and food and wine.

I would love to see the Car Museum or Car display. I would be coming from Graz by car. Clear directions would be appreciated.

Re: Location of Auto Museum

by angiebabe

hi I think its Globetrott that has good tips on the car museum you are looking for. Head for his travel pages and then others travel pages written by other VTers on Graz.

by christine.j

Have you seen the museum's website? They give good directions on how to get there, but it seems in German only. Still, a gps in your car will be able to tell you the way. I also like michelin or google maps for good descriptions.

If you are also interested in other cars, there is the Mercedes Museum near Stuttgart, which you could visit on your way from Graz to Wolfsburg.

And a small one, but in a town with good food and wine:

Ladenburg is the town where Carl Benz moved and which now boasts of the world's first garage for a car.

Now things are going totally confused - Schlumpf Collection in Mulhouse, France is, again, another museum in a totally different location.

Mcmon30: You posted in the Wolfsburg forum so I assume you want the Volkswagen museum, i.e. Autostadt, in Wolfsburg. Right? But this is nowhere near Graz, it is a full day's drive to get there, and another full day back.

Re: Location of Auto Museum

What Kathrin wrote in her last paragraph is exactly what baffles me. Perhaps you are a Volkswagen "fan", which would explain why you want to drive all the way from Graz to Wolfsburg (an otherwise pretty boring city - no offense to people from Wolfsburg), leaving the museums of BMW, Mercedes and Porsche behind.

Re: Location of Auto Museum

Hi - Thanks for that and now all I need is a map. We will most likely be passing all these places as we are travelling from Paris on a circuitous route so any diversions can be a possibility? I will look up each response and then ask more questions. You have raised a valuable point.

Re: Location of Auto Museum

by Kathrin_E

Another option that has so far not been mentioned and is probably closer to your route: Audi Museum (museum mobile) in Ingolstadt.

If you visit Munich, there is also Deutsches Museum with its different departments: http://www.deutsches-museum.de/index.php?L=1

Re: Location of Auto Museum

by Mcmon30

Thank you for that one. We will be near Mulhouse earlier in our travels so now we will call in. We saw the original pics when the cars were first uncovered and it was an amazing story.

Re: Location of Auto Museum

by Mcmon30

Hi Kathrin,

All good info. We will be near Mulhouse earlier in our travels. I am interested in any Museums where cars are concerned. I will take some time tomorrow as it is nearly midnight here to locate on a map where each place happens to be located and then reassess what we do.

> Audi Museum (museum mobile) in Ingolstadt

Zing. I thought they were in Wolfsburg as well, as Audi is part of the VW Group.

Speaking of Deutsches Museum, there is Auto & Technik Museum in Sinsheim and - nearby - the Technik Museum in Speyer.

Re: Location of Auto Museum

hi so if you will be in Mulhouse I guess you are planning to go to Colmar - which is what Im recommending here - stunning old town and all around Alsace is just wonderful, the castle nearby is fantastic - you have to get in before they shut for their lunch break. or go after it.
there is a textile museum in Mulhouse which is also fab - shows the history of obtaining paisley prints from India etc - worth while.

The lonely planet is really helpful for places to see around there as is the Rough guide for even more info on smaller sites and sights.
How exciting for you! and by car far beats what so many aussies do jumping on a big bus tour...

Nope. The centre and biggest(?) Audi factory is in Ingolstadt. I visited a month ago. Unfortunately my Ingosltadt page is yet to be written.
Their website is, sorry, in German only: http://www.audi.de/de/brand/de/erlebniswelt/audi_forum/audi_forum_ingolstadt/museum_mobile.html

There seems to be an interesting museum in Zwickau/Saxony, where Horch resp. Audi and some other historical car producers originate: http://www.horch-museum.de/ - I have not (yet) been to that one. But this is really really a detour.

Re: Location of Auto Museum

by Kathrin_E

... and if you go to Mulhouse, don't miss Ecomusée d'Alsace in nearby Ungersheim, an open air museum village with houses from all over Alsace and presentations about rural life in former centuries.

Alsace is also an excellent destination for food and wine lovers.

That's right and no news to me, I thought the *museum* in Wolfsburg would not only sport VWs but Audis too.

Re: Location of Auto Museum

by Mcmon30

Wow ! I am certainly getting plenty of feedback. Now back to the maps.

Is there a similar sounding name of a town in Austria to the Wolfsburg we seem to be tracking in Germany?

Cheers John

Re: Location of Auto Museum

by Mcmon30

Hi again Kerin, Tku for more good input. We are having a few days in the north West of France including Colmar. So will most definitely be looking at all those interesting places. We like to travel by ourselves as we can go places where tourists do not get to. Love trains also.
Ciao J

Re: Location of Auto Museum

by christine.j

I don't know of any Wolfsburg in Austria, but there is a WolfsbErg in Austria, maybe you meant this town?
If you travel to Colmar, which I by the way would put in the North-East of France, and then up to Wolfsburg, you could easily visit Ladenburg. This is a very nice small town, off the beaten path. But check the opening times of the museum, to make sure it's open when you're there.(See the link above)

Town view and picnic

by Sjalen

The hill behind the hospital is the place. I can't remember the name now but it has a war memorial and above all, good views of town and the surroundings. It also has a tiny animal enclosure which isn't very impressive but could be good if you find yourself stuck in WOB with children.

"Attending the Friendly Match Germany vs Canada"

I know Wolfsburg quite well since I had been working there for some time some years ago.

Recently - in May 2003, to be exact, I went to this city to check out the new stadium when Hertha BSC had to play VfL Wolfsburg in a Bundesliga match. Even though my club lost 0-2, I liked the new "Volkswagen Arena" so much that I returned to Wolfsburg just a few weeks later, mainly to see the friendly match between Germany and Canada, which was played on June 1, 2003.

Having arrived somewhat early by train from Berlin, I had time to briefly check out parts of the "Autostadt" (i. e. "Car City"), which is located not too far off the stadium (O.K., nothing at Wolfsburg seems to be located too far off the stadium - it's a comparatively small city ...).

I took some nice shots at both the "Autostadt" and the "Volkswagen Arena" and I'm going to present some of them here on these pages of mine ... like it or not!
