The place I live, when I am not travelling
"A little more than the average City of Germany"
Hi,
at the 1st and 2nd glance, there's nothing special about this town, but if you lokk clother, you will find something.... 320,000 inhabitants by the fact that they incorporated their surroundings in 1972, the city itsself is like 150,000 inh. What I like here: It's a very green town with huge parks and a forest (Teutoburger Wald) covering an important part of the surface. Fortunately, they have founded a very good university here which attracts young people from all over the world, mainly from Poland, Russia, China and many other places. There are quite a lot of very good pubs and bars, three or four really good cinemas (www.filmhaus-bielefeld.de for example) and a lot of creative people, for example www.artistsunlimited.de) .
Many companies start new products on the local market here, because Bielefeld economic data are very close to te national average.
"Carneval of Cultures"
If you really want t see this town being rather known for it's quite and introverted people singing and dancing, join the Carneval der Kulturen (Carneval of Cultures) every year late May/early June (for details check www.carnival-bielefeld.de). It has been imported from Trinidad and other places via London Notting Hill to Bielefeld with one of the Notting Hill Carneval members who had moved to Bielefeld. It's the 2nd Carnival of Cultures in Germany after Berlin.
"places to go and city of arts"
We have quite a lot of places to go and meet interesting people: Best is Cafe Parlando with a lot of culture and political activity going on (www.cafe-parlando.de), to enjoy Vienna Kaffeehaus atmosphere see www.ratscafe.de and for really good jazz concerts, lectures, exposition of local artists and other cultural events go http://www.bunker-ulmenwall.de/
and in the Nordpark, a beautiful park there is a nice cafe with a terrace. In the park of the Kunsthalle it his the beautifully styled Cafè Schaefers with a terrace in the park, too. For Concerts and dancing Zweischlingen is a good place www.zweischlingen-gastro.de
We have a lot of creative artist here. Evere year in Aug./Sept they open their up to 90 workshops to the public: www.offeneateliers-bielefeld.de On the picture you see my son visiting an artist's project protesting against the Iraq war.
Also a world wide arts project for understanding and against destruction of the ressources of our planet is based in Bielefeld: Art at Work. They do projects all around the world many of them in cooperation with UNESCO (www.unesco.de)
