There's a steam train running...
by Knutt
From my experience, many men and kids are into trains, especially those trains that make a lot of noise and produce a tremendous amount of smoke.
If you like to listen to the noise of the steam whistle, you could visit the Eisenbahnmuseum (museum for trains) in Dahlhausen, which is a small suburb of Bochum at the river Ruhr. Here you can find a number of old steam trains and everything else that is somehow related to this way of transportation.
On weekends the museum offers trips with those old trains along the river and in the summer the museum is open till late in the evening (check the homepage for dates and details) so that photo addicts can take wonderful pictures of the trains at sunset...

Bochum

"Depressive"
A depressive city, like Duisburg or Moers. I don't know what's wrong with these German cities...
Bochum is a quiet city (or a dormitory) east of Essen, nobody on the streets, no shops, no cafes.
The day was grey and cold, passed along Bergbaumuseum, with its large engine, that added a sinister look to the whole trip. Thumbs down.

GLÜCK AUF!
by Bagillbaer
Essen is where I live, Bochum is where I study - both cities are part of the big urban area that is the Ruhrgebiet (Ruhr=name of a river, Gebiet=area) or more commonly the "Ruhrpott".Getting from one city to the other usually only takes you maybe 10-15 minutes by train, which can come very handy concerning nightlife-strategies and such. Only problem that remains is reaching your suburbian home from the main stations late at night... Anyhoo, Bochum is one rather cool city to be as it has loads of discos, concert clubs, the famous musical "Starlight Express", a planetarium, a very renowned theatre, a 3D cinema, museums... in one word: culture. It's not exactly a pretty place, but it's getting better and better. And as already mentioned, this is the city that hosts my university - it's dirt ugly (architectural subtelty? Oh, wasn't that this tropical plant?) - yet I LUV it :o). Honestly, I do love my uni, always did, even when I was a wee lassie and only went to the neighbouring Uni Center for shopping (nice bookshops). It just has this ambience of a fortress towering over the bosky hills (and the views you get from the cafeteria *uuuuuuuuuh* superb!!!). O.k., enough of that praise, take a look in my University-travelogue if you wanna know more about it *heeeeeee*...
