Hotel Groß: Half a block from the Beethoven House

    This is a very basic hotel, but centrally located and not expensive by Bonn standards.

    There is no automobile noise because it is in the pedestrian zone, but you can expect to hear the occasional group of revelers, I guess you would call them, trying to fine their way home from one of the pubs in the middle of the night. Personally I will take revelers over automobiles any day, err, night.

    I booked through one of my usual websites and paid EUR 59.00 per night.

    This hotel is right behind the opera house, which means that visiting singers sometimes stay here.

    Several years ago I spent a night at this hotel when I was in Bonn on business. I don't remember anything negative about it, nor how much it cost since I didn't pay for it myself.

    But it has an unbeatable location, I'm sure you'll agree.

    This is a friendly hotel with a good location. It was very clean and comfortable. They have non-smoking rooms as well as smoking rooms. In the shower/toilet there was also a hair dryer. Minibar in the room and TV. Additional pillows in the wardrobe. A small chocolate at the bedside table as a welcome. The central heating system worked very well, you can adjust it individually. There is also a aircon system or you can open the window.

    The buffet breakfast was simply excellent with it's choice of cheeses, cold meats, cereal, fresh fruit salad etc. Tea and coffee is served at the table and there are various kinds of teas.

    You can park your car in their outdoor parking lot for 5 Euros a night. There is also a public underground parking under the building but it is not open 24 hours a day. They also have a left luggage room.

    The hotel has no steps and is therefore wheelchair accessable. In the breakfast room there are no steps for the buffet and some tables.

    A double room is around 70 Euros, depending when and on which site you book.

    The hotel is centrally located & about 10min walk to the station & close to Beethoven's birthplace. I requested a room with a view onto the courtyard as I believe rooms that back onto the busy main road can be noisy.
    The room was pretty standard but pleasent and clean with powerful shower no bath.

    Breakfast was a plentiful buffet of cereals, fruit & youghurt there was a cheese & cold meats selection as well as a hot tray of sausage and scrambled egg. The coffee is very strong - you have been warned. Also nut allergy sufferers please note some of the speciality breads do contain seeds!!

    Most of the VT'ers on the wineroll stayed at this hotel which made for interesting VT spotting over the breakfast table.

    One thing I did find unpleasent was the fact that people were allowed to smoke in reception & one gentleman smoked his stinky cigar which made me feel ill but you are near the door for a breath of fresh air. We were on a no smoking floor in the hotel

    I stayed in Insel hotel, it is centrally located between the park and the main shopping area, facing the Godesburg- castle. Railway- and underground station are nearby.
    The restaurant offers a variety of German food. The coffee-house serves self-made pastry and a special coffee selection. In the summer-time the terrace is open with lovely view of the town.

    We had decided to do some walking during our weekend in Bonn and surrounding area so decided not to stay in the city but choose an hotel in the area around Bonn.
    By chance we found Hotel Zur Post in Altenahr and it was a good choice. The hotel was clean, quiet, easy to get to and from and the people were very friendly. Altenahr is in the Ahr valley and is a little town with places to eat and lots of hotels. It is a tourist area with plenty of opportunities for walking. It is about 30 kilometres from Bonn which was easy to get to.

    We had a non-smoking room and all these rooms are in a little dependance across the road from the main hotel. The room was very clean and there were two chairs so we could sit and relax in the evening. The breakfast was very good and the coffee strong and hot. There is a swimmimgpool and sauna although we did not use them.

    Prices start at EUR 95 (single) up to 135 (double) during weekdays and EUR 69 (single) up to EUR 89 (double) at weekends.

    I love the classy ambiance of this upper class hotel! 2 different room styles to choose from: modern and classic (same rates - just depends on your mood and flavour). "Modern" are terracotta coloured rooms with a "trendier" ambiance, "classic" rooms are classically furnished with thick carpets and dark wooden furniture.

    • We made a superb choice of hotel. Clean, friendly, helpful, wholesome breakfast (we ate other meals elsewhere) and well kitted out rooms.

    We did manage to get a fabulous rate for our stay at this hotel making it great value for money.
