Beethoven Haus

by Sjalen

Beethoven was born here and even though he never spent long in Bonn, his birthplace is today a museum dedicated to the great composer and his works and holding the world's largest collection of Beethoven items. You can listen to his music, let the computers show you his scores and letters, read about his life and see the hearing aids created by his friend, not to mention see his grand piano and other instruments. Afterwards, you can buy numerous nice souvenirs in the adjacent shop. This really is a treasure and it was all made possible through the effort of some local Bonn citizens who collected enough money to buy the house and found a society in Beethoven's honour in the late 19th century. If you like Beethoven (or art), you might also want to visit the "Beethon" monument outside the Beethovenhalle concert hall. We never had the time but several other Bonn pages have pictures of this fascinating sculpture of the composer's face.

The Babbage Machines

by Nemorino

Among the over 1200 historical mechanical calculating machines on display at the Arithmeum there are two replicas of (parts of) machines invented by Charles Babbage (1791-1871), an English mathematician and inventor who is often described as the "Father of Computing" for his contributions to the basic design of the computer -- a century or more ahead of his time!

The machine in the first photo is a replica of the Difference Engine, which Babbage started developing in 1822.

Second photo: From 1833 onwards, Babbage worked on the concept of the Analytical Engine, which in spite of being purely mechanical contained essentially all the components of a modern computer. He never did get it to work properly, because one or another of the mechanical parts was always failing, but the programs he wrote for it bear an amazing resemblance to the modern computer programs that we use today.

My day in Bonn

"Bonn"

Bonn is a wonderful city! We visited St. Martin's Church and a little downtown promenade-like area, where you can find the childhood home of Beethoven.

In the picture above, you can see the massive crowd of young pilgrims that Weltjugendtag 2005 brought, in August 2005. This picture was taken outside of St. Martin's, and the crowd extended around the entire building, as well as into the neighboring streets.

"The relics of Ss. Cassius and Florentius"

St. Martin's church, built in 1166, houses the relics of two ancient martyrs, Ss. Cassius and Florentius. There are two giant stone heads outside the church, laying on their side as if beheaded.

Ss. Cassius and Florentius were two of nine martyrs who were murdered at the command of Emperor Maximian Herculeus in Bonn in 303 A.D. The stone sculptures outside the church tell us how they were martyred, they were beheaded.

Their relics are housed in a crypt underneath the adoration chapel. The were originally stored in a different 4th century church, but then moved to St. Martins when it was built in 1166.

"St. Martin's Church"

This church, built in 1166, is really beautiful inside and out. While it does not compare to the Cathedrals at Cologne or Aachen, it is still really beautiful.

Behind the altar is a beautiful mosaic of Jesus, sitting on a rainbow. The spectrum of the rainbow add some beautiful color to this work of art.

The relics of the two martyrs are kept in a crypt underneath the adoration chapel in the church. The adoration chapel is a beautiful one, of course the true beauty of the room is supplied by the radiance of grace coming forth from the Blessed Sacrament.

We spent about a half hour here, in which I prayed my rosary while reading the psalms, basking in the Lord's grace the entire time. It was one of those deep, personal experiences which words cannot come close to describing, but suffice it to say I've never before felt anything quite like it, and it makes me want to go to adoration more and more.
