Day Trip

by rtnichols428

I traveling with a group of 4 in July to Amsterdam. We would like to take a day trip to Cologne but I am very confused with the train websites. What is the best way to get there from amsterdam round trip? Thank you

Re: Day Trip

by Maryimelda

The train journey takes about 2 hrs and 40 minutes each way. Round trip fare is 114 Euros. If you keep an eye on the Dutch Rail site you may get an advance special. Same goes for the bahn.de (German rail site). I don't really know if there would be advance round trip specials, I've never had need of one.

I bought a ticket in Germany to Amsterdam and back. It was easy as I went to the train ticket office and they arrange everything, sold me the tickets. They told me that the train will switch tracks and to stay on the train. It was about a three hour ride but it went smoothly. Enjoyed the train and had lunch in the food car. Enjoy your travels, Tommy x

You can check trains and times on www.bahn.de, and you can book your ticket there, then print it out. Just make sure you have the same credit card with you in the train, the same card you used for booking.

I just had a quick look, for July there are still special fares available, the cheapest start at 38 Euro round trip, then it's 58 Euro, regular fare is 114 Euro. With the specials fare you book one specific train. If you want to make use of a special, book as soon as possible, they sell out quickly.

You can also book through
http://www.nshispeed.nl/
From: Amsterdam Centraal
To: Keulen
(Keulen is the Dutch word for Cologne. In German it's Köln.)

Sometimes it's easier to get the (same) specials from this NS site, instead from DB. Latter is however less prone to problems during the booking process.

DB timetable
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en
From: Amsterdam Centraal
To: Cologne
(will default to Köln Hbf)

Nice thing in Cologne is the distance - or better non-distance - between the Hauptbahnhof (Hbf - main train station) and the most important sight.

Gepäck Schliessfach Automat

by diocletianvs

I am known as person that gives names to devices and is often caught talking to computers, toasters or coffee machines. People usually find this weird.

But not people that ever left their luggage at Cologne train station.

Of course, there are no counters and no people. If you follow the sign saying 'Gepäck / Luggage' you'll find only cold and efficient luggage machine. You insert a coin (3 Eur for 24 hours) and the door will open for your bag. Then the door will close, you'll hear your bag going somewhere deep under and you'll get a small ticket with a magnetic stripe that says:

'You have just left your bag to the mercy of the stupid machine. Now, if you want your bag back please turn back. What you'll see right outside the train station is the huge Cologne Cathedral. Now choose the Saint you trust and pray 3 HolyMary's for the well being of your dear bag'.

I took the instructions seriously, prayed to Santa Ursula and even lit a candle inside the Cathedral.

In the evening The Machine was satisfied and retuned me the same bag I left earlier, saying: Vielen Dank, you are a good Christian!

There were some bad Christians next to me that were now talking to the Machine ;)

Live Music or Dancing

by sabsi about Live Music Hall

As Cologne ALWAYS has great concerts you will go to Live Music Hall sooner or later when you live around the area. A lot of small club concerts (about 1000 people maybe) take place here. It's a great place for concerts, sound is ok and you can see the stage quite well from everywhere - even if you are small like me.

At weekends they also have disco evenings here which are supposed to be nice. Alternateenie-Style

A Bird View of Cologne

by witness_wannabe

The Arena is in located in the proximity of Messe/Deutz S-Bahn train station. It is easy to find, since it is the only tall building in the area (blue, cyllindrical shape). The views from the top are outstanding, but..... rather NOT for the photographers! The observation deck is glass-screened and the glare prevents from taking some really pleasing shots. Unfortunately.
