Cologne to Bonn on the Stadtbahn
by SWFC_Fan
Cologne's extensive Stadtbahn tram network not only covers the city and its suburbs, it also stretches as far as neighbouring Bonn.
I used the Stadtbahn in order to visit Bonn as a daytrip from Cologne in July 2006. The following information is correct as of that date:
Stadtbahn #18 makes the journey between Cologne and Bonn Hauptbahnhof. I actually caught this tram at Mulheim Wienerplatz station, close to my hotel, and it stopped at Cologne Hauptbahnhof 10 minutes and half a dozen stops later.
The journey from Mulheim to Bonn took 70 minutes. However, the journey between Cologne Hauptbahnhof and Bonn Hauptbahnhof is approximately 1 hour.
Tickets (price category 4) can be purchased from the machines at all Stadtbahn stations and must be validated on board the tram. The cost of a one-way ticket is 6.10 Euros.
The journey between Cologne and Bonn includes stops at Bruhl and Bornheim as well as dozens of smaller suburban stations.
It would be quicker to catch a train rather than the Stadtbahn between Cologne and Bonn, but I think it would also be more expensive.
The 'Bastei' (rather pricey!),...
by colonius1
The 'Bastei' (rather pricey!), the 'Walfisch' near the river south of the cathedral near Great St. Martin's Church and the 'Stapelhaus'. The 'Bier Esel' (famous for its mussel dishes), 'Paeffgen' pub, 'Em goldene Kappes' in the suburb of Nippes, the 'Oasis' restaurant across the Rhine from where you have a wonderful view of Cologne. Don't forget 'Em Koelsche Boor' on the 'Eigelstein street', near the Eigelstein City Gate with the Cruiser 'Koeln' life boat from WW I displayed outside. Except for the 'Bastei' where the menu is international/gourmet, Cologne specialties include 'Halve Hahn', 'Rievkoche', 'Aetzesupp met Speck', 'Koelsche Kaviar', all washed down with a few glasses of 'Koelsch' beer.
The Dom
by myriam_c
The best known monument in the city is undoubtedly the Hohen Dom zu Köln. It has two spires of 157 metres height that can be seen throughout the city.
Building this cathedral has taken 632 years. The reason is that, in the 16th century (I believe) the construction works came to a standstill and it wasn't until the 19th century that they restarted to build. It then still took 38 years before the cathedral was finished.
The Dom is especially known because it holds the sarcophagus with the relics of the Holy Epiphany which date from the 13th century.
