A yard of ale
by ettenaj
We were suprised to see that in the bars and restuarants, a group of people ordering drinks, when the drinks arrived at the table they were in a long tray like thing holding 10 glasses, much better than to have to keep reordering through the evening. What a great idea.
Kölsch, Irish-style
by BillNJ about The Corkonian Irish Pub
During my second night in Cologne, I enjoyed a nice chat with two young German women and an Irish bartender in The Corkonian Irish Pub in the Alter Markt. I ordered a Kölsch, and it was served in a large glass (not a traditional 200ml Kölsch Stange).
The Corkonian is a friendly Irish pub in a great location. Experience Kölsch, Irish-style. No special dress requirements
more about the rail station
by stefank60
The rail station has multi lingual, easy to use ticket machines. You choose your date, route and times and pay by credit/debit card. The machine can also print off rail times.
On the staion platforms there are boards which list the train numbers and show where on the platform the various carriages will be i.e. 1st class, the buffet car and 2nd class.
Electronic displays tell you where the next train to depart is going to.
There are many different standards of train depending where they are going and prices reflect the comfort level and speed of the trains.
For example I took a day trip to Koblenz :
The outward journey was on an IC train and was €18 whilst the return was an ICE train (originatiing in Vienna and terminating at Hamburg altona) and this cost €21.
Both these trains were very smart, fast and comfortable.
Good value Turkish food in Mulheim
by SWFC_Fan about Bey Doner
During my visit to Cologne in July 2006, I stayed in the suburb of Mulheim (about a 10 minute public transport journey north east of Cologne city centre). Mulheim is home to a large Turkish population, so you will find quite a few Middle Eastern restaurants in the area.
Bey Doner is one such Turkish / Middle Eastern restaurant. I ate here one evening during my stay.
This no frills fast food restaurant is located on Frankfurterstrasse, the main shopping street in Mulheim, just a few metres away from the large Wiener Platz square.
The menu consists largely of kebabs (in various forms, with a variety of meats and with a selection of accompaniments), as well as sausages and falafel.
There are just a couple of tables inside, but many customers buy food to take away. I sat at one of the tables watching the World Cup game between Germany and Portugal which was being screened on a TV in the corner of the room. I opted for:
2 x Doner sandwiches - Cost: 2.60 Euros each
Tasty doner meat sliced from the spit and stuffed into a large, warm breadcake. You can choose from various salad items and sauces to complete your sandwich. I had lettuce, onions and mint sauce. The sandwiches were very tasty (if not particularly healthy!), very filling and excellent value for money.
330ml bottle of Coca Cola - Cost: 1.30 Euros
Tasty and filling kebabs and Turkish food in the suburb of Mulheim. Highly recommended for budget travellers!
Drinking whilst pedalling !!!

For those of you who like a beer or two, and exercise at the same time in the company of other likeminded folk, then this mode of transport may be the one for you.
It is affectionally known as the Beer Bike . It looks hard work but from the fun and laughter coming from the participants, they did not seem to mind one iota.
I have given you the website, but unfortunately it is in German, but if you are in any of the German cities shown on the map on the website, I am sure the local tourist office will enlighten you.
