Friendly Small Hotel near River Rhine
This is a small (17room) hotel run by an English lady and her son. It was about 3 blocks walk from the train station (don't exit on the Dom Cathedral side, exit on the opposite side)...and we made it fine with luggage on wheels. In a quiet neighborhood, you have to buzz to have someone let you in (great for security I guess) and they show you to your room. Ours was spotlessly clean, nicely appointed (nothing old or musty) and had a very modern bathroom. Accomodation was small for 2 persons but average or above for hotels in Germany. The breakfast was very good, with fresh fruit, cereals, yogurt....and an attendant who offered toast, eggs or ham when we wished. They also offered a 24 hour room service should you want a snack, and they had a small bar area with tasty beers and snacks.
We like to stay "among the locals" when we travel and this place, though very close to the main square and the Cathedral, was quiet and very German. We loved wandering the neighborhoods and coming back to our hotel. Three nights was about perfect for Cologne (we took a day trip to Bonn to see Beethoven House) and the Hotel Buchholz made our stay in Cologne very pleasant. Thank you to Carole and Sascha and everyone at the hotel! Hope to stay with you again one day.
