Silvester Restaurant in Cologne

Hi,
we are 5 friends and we'll stay in Cologne next New Years eve. Do anybody know a restaurant for Silvester dinner? Thanks

You might wanna try the Stadtgarten which is a combination of a restaurant and a concert venue. The restaurant is known for its inexpensive and tasty international cuisine. So far they have nothing announced for Silvester, so maybe you need to re-check their website and give them a call in advance to enquire about a special event/party that day or make a reservation.

The so-called old town which is the triangle between the Dom, the riverfront and Heumarkt square will likely be full of partygoers. I would recommend that you have dinner around the usual time well before the masses pour into downtown.

You could also celebrate on a riverboat... advantage being you will get a really nice view of the fireworks and dinner and party are inclusive... disadvantes are that it's quite expensive, the boat may be even more cramped than the riverfront and the food tends to be mediocre...and there is no way for you to escape before the boat calls at the pier again!!!

Yes exactly, it's very casual. In case you are looking for a more formal NYE dinner, you might wanna try the Marriot or Hyatt Hotels.

BTW Cologne has a large Turkish minority, so there are many decent Turkish restaurants ranging from Döner Kebap fast food stalls over Halal family restaurants (my favourite: Doy Doy restaurant in Keupstraße in Cologne-Mühlheim http://www.buyukharran-doydoy.de ) to upscale cuisine, for instance the Bosporus www.bosporus.de

This is especially a good alternative if you don't like the heavy greasy German Brauhaus food.

Travel Tips for Cologne

Tourist office

As usually, I visited the city tourist office as soon as I arrived to Cologne. They are a good place for free maps and brochures, and you can also buy souvenirs, books or book a hotel.

I bought a small brochure "Cologne - a practical guide" (9,80 Eur) which had many useful info on history and sighseeing points in Cologne.

The tourist office is situated right in front of the Cathedral. Here are some useful websites if you're planning your trip to Cologne:

Tipping

While service charges are included in your restaurant bill, it's usual to round up the bill anywhere from the nearest dollar to 5%.

This should be given to the waiter/waitress when paying. Don't leave any money on the table. In a taxi, there’s no need to go beyond rounding up to the nearest dollar to tip unless the service is extraordinary.

Airport To City

The journey from Cologne/Bonn Airport is the easiest of anywhere I've been. The airport itself is lovely and there is no long walk from the aircraft to the baggage hall. Once you've collected your luggage, you exit by a door right in the baggage hall and you are in the main arrivals concourse. Taxis wait right outside the doors and the signage to other areas is clear and easily visible.

If you want to take the train into Cologne city, it couldn't be easier. The train station is underneath Terminal 2 and can be accessed by a glass lift so you don't need to struggle with luggage on the escalators. Turn left out of the lift and go through the glass doors facing you to find the ticket machines. The fare to the city centre (Koln Hauptbahnhof) is €2.20 but you will need euro coins because there's no manned ticket office.

Once you've bought your ticket, another glass lift behind the machines takes you down to the platform and the trains are frequent. The journey takes about 15 mins, depending on which type of train it is, i.e. how many stops it makes.

When you get off the train at Koln Hauptbahnhof, you are bang in the city centre, right beside the Cathedral and there's yet another glass lift to take you down to street level.

This is a popular local brewery restaurant. Even that this is surely a tourist trap it is worth the visit, even if just to see how things done here and to feel the local customs.

*Do not make jokes on the local beer, they almost throw me away from this place. ;-)

Museum Ludwig

The vast holdings of 20th-century art displayed in the stunning Museum Ludwig are among the greatest anywhere. They occupy a large segment of a spectacular cultureal center wedged between the cathedral and the Rhine, which also houses the Philharmonie concert hall and the Cinemathek film theater. Allow plenty of time to peruse works by Picasso, Kandinsky, Dali, Max Ernst, Oldenburg, Rauschenberg, and Warhol...just to name a few.
