SUMMERJAM: Eat and Drink
by RudoElCojonudo
The food and the drink are quite expesive, so I would recomend to buy sth in a supermarket before going there.
If you want to have cold drink you can put a box of beers inside the bar close to the main entrance for 2€ a day. Hot beer isn´t very refreshing. ;-$
It´s not alowed to go to the island with glass bottles so put your drinks in plastic bottles before going inside. You´ll earn some euros!! ;-D
Cologne people
by Sjalen
Cologne people are seen as lazy by other Germans and in particular the Prussians throughout history. This fountain near the cathedral is a monument to the Cologne temper as it shows a merchant's wife in a household where gnomes did all the work whilst the family slept, but one day the lady in the house wanted so much to see who did all the hard work in the house that she put peas in the staircase. What you see is therefore loads of gnomes falling over. They were supposedly so angered by this that they left the house, never to come back.
When the Prussians came to town, there was much being done that "those lazy Colonians" had never done. Finish the cathedral for once! Why had it been semi-finished since the 13th century, they wondered. And well...still today, Cologne is known for its carneval and relaxed lifestyle.
Rent a bike
by Nathalie_B
I really liked the idea of the Deutsche Bahn and their bikes. The system is easy if you have a credit/debit card you can rent a bike by dialing 0700 0 5 22 55 22 and getting an electronic code that will help you to unlock the bike you're interested it. How does it work? These bikes can be seen all over Koln (and some other major German cities) if you see a blinking green light on the lock of the bicycle it means that it is free for use. You're free to leave it anywhere winthin the designated routes, once you;re done using it. It's a very convenient mode of transportation if you want to explore the city by bike without going back and returning to the place where you rented it from. It is a little bit pricey, 15 Euro per 24 hours or 8 Euro cents per minute, but you don't have to worry about your bike being stolen and as I already mentioned, you can take from anywhere in the city once you spotted it on the street, with its green light.

Fruh
by FrostyJW about Good beer and food
This famous and very popular brew house is worth a visit. The Brewery Cellar downstairs is the best place to eat and drink, and has hundreds of tables in all sorts of places. It can be VERY busy in the evening, but service still good and efficient. The food we had was very good, and though maybe a little more costly than some less famous places but was still good value and good. The beer is excellent, light, fresh, crisp and slightly more bitter than some other Kolsch beers. I had Pork Medallions with fresh vegetables and fried potatoes, and my partner had pork pieces in vegetables on a metal skillet, also with fried potatoes and both were very good.
Impressive!
by King_Golo
Cologne's cathedral (Kölner Dom) is one of the most impressive and also biggest churches in Germany. It may even be the biggest one if consider its size and not its height, but I'm not sure about that. Anyway, it was built in Gothic style but has basically been a construction site ever since. Even today, parts are refurbished or renewed or finished...
The inside is great: a vast Gothic room with beautifully coloured windows through which the sun shines and leaves a strange light inside the church.
More impressive even is the view from up the tower. To get on top you have to climb 509 steps (no lift available!), but the view over the Rhine with its many ships, the roofs of the city, the people looking tiny as ants in the surrounding pedestrian zone, or - as long as the air is clear - the nearby area is marvellous! This is a sight that you definitely shouldn't miss!
