Bachelor Party
by jmhenry1123
Unlike the more bacchante and debaucherous traditions in the United States of celebrating that last night of bachelorhood, Cologne has devised a much more fun yet embarassing celebration.
We just left a brauhaus and we see a guy dressed as a chicken with all his buddies. They then borrow a street musician's guitar, assemble themselves and begin singing John Denver's "Take me home, country road" in perfect English. People were throwing tips at them and they then gave their tips to the street musician girl.
They then moved on to another brauhaus where they sang some more. Conclusion: part 1, Germans like to sing. part 2, Germans love to sing when drinking beer and embarassing their friend.
The girls get dressed up too but it isn't as embarassing as the guys. I saw a guy dressed as a Swiss Miss with wooden clogs trying to sell pieces of swiss cheese, another guy dressed as a bumble bee.
It provided for great carnival atmosphere and people watching.
4711 Shop
by kentishgirl
You can buy anything made with the famous Eau De Cologne - 4711 here.
You can buy most things in other shops in Cologne too, but for me there was just something special about buying it here in this shop where it originated with a 4711, Glockengass, Cologne stamp on it!
They have a barrel with running Eau De Cologne - you can dip your hand under it and get a free splash of 4711! You can buy bags, towels, t - shirts all with the 4711 logo on, you can also buy perfume, soap, room spray, from the 4711 range and other manufacturers perfumes are also sold here. From approximatley 2 euro upwards...2 euro will buy you a soap!
Train
by sandysmith
Of course many will arrive in Cologne by train - good connections across Europe.
Here you will be right in the centre immediately with the cathedral on your doorstep, Have a look first though at the Hohenzollernbrucke as you enter of leave by train - you can get a really nice view of its arches here and note the equestrian statue too.
The Extrablatt that used to be the swan
by sabsi about Extrablatt
One of the nice outside terraces at Alter Markt belongs to "Extrablatt" - a chain of bars that I donÄt really like. It used to be called "Schwan" but now changed to one of the infamous Extrablatt places.
It's always ok to come here for a coffee or a snack (or in summer for a cold drink on the terrace) but that's about it if you ask me. The "Cajun" chips with aioli are always nice as a snack.

The Dom is a unique building and contains so many works of Art and if you feel like it, it is a perfect place to find God, and yourself perhaps, again!
Next to the DOM is the workshop where sculptors restore the ancient statues........do have a look there, it is very interesting, see my photos!
The Tourist OFFICE is opposite the giant of a DOM and DO go there, they can provide you with all info you will need!
