Like to find a great beer house in Colgone

by jasonhills

We will be in Cologne during the xmas markets in December and would like to find a traditional beer house to sample some Kolsch. But I want to avoid the "tourist trap" type of establishments!
Thanks in advance.

Every beer house and most cafe's sell the amber nectar.
Our favorite place was near the Dom, just before you entered the railway station.
It was a little cafe with all glass walls and high seats, we could drink a beer or coffee and watch the world go by.
More info is available on my and other vt members travel pages on Cologne.

Since you're asking for traditional, you want the whole experience I take it. In that case, I'd head for Päffigen! You can see why on my Cologne page. It is a bit less touristy than for instance Früh am Dom, but even there you can have fun as it is so crowded and hectic it is an amazing place. Sion is another good Kölsch but as for atmosphere, Päffigen is great!

Prepare yourself for crowds though. Last year, the whole Altstadt had to be closed because there were too many people. An excellent alternative would be the medieval x-mas market in Siegburg (20 minutes by train from Cologne), there also is a brewery hose in Siegburg's pedestrian zone.

Travel Tips for Cologne

I was told that the Hohenzolernbrucke is the busiest bridge in Europe, with the largest number of trains passing per hour. Same goes for Cologne Main Station that is one of the busiest railway junctions in Europe. There is certainly no reason to doubt this as there are literally trains passing every half minute or so and the Hohenzollernbrucke is definitely a paradise for all trainspotters.

It is a great idea to construct a bridge only for trains and pedestrians - you walk only a few meters from the tracks (separated by the fence, of course) and you literally feel the passing train through the noise and the shaking of the impressive metal construction.

Although it was rather cold and windy Sabsi and I spent almost an hour here, catching the ICE and local trains as well as reflections of the bridge and the cathedral.

Definitely the best trainspotting spot I've ever been to!

There are plenty of shooping possibilities in Koln. As I have already mentioned even the Hauptbanhof (amin station) has a sizeable shopping mall. The station is also the starting point for Hohe Strasse one of the main shopping streets which covers just about any type of shopping you could want. there are also side streets and alleyways with more shops.

There are also bars, cafes , bakeries and other outlets for food and drink.

Miniature Train

by AnnS

A great way of travelling around Cologne is on the jolly little miniature train - Wolters Bimmelbahnen. It's actually not a train because it runs on large rubber wheels but the ride is a lot of fun, albeit bumpy, as it threads its way through the streets of Cologne. You can buy a ticket for a single destination or a 'hop on, hop off' all day ticket. It starts in front of the Cathedral and you buy tickets from the driver. There's the "Schoko-Express" which visits the Chocolate Museum, the "Zoo Express" and at Christmas, the "Weihnachtsmarkt-Express" which visits the four Cologne Christmas markets. Further details are available from the Cologne Tourist Office, also situated in front of the Cathedral.

This is one of the main Brewery houses in Cologne, its located close to the Dom. They offer a big German menu so that you can taste real German food! And they also serve the local brew - Kolsch.

It was really busy when we were here, with lots of staff rushing all over the place!

Cologne Dom Cathedral

The Cathedral dominates the skyline of Cologne and is a very imposing sight the closer you get. Located opposite the train station it is an architectural marvel. Next time I will go in and see the fabulous interior.
