A 17 Year Old Visiting Cologne for 2 Months in the Summer

by JulieSC25

My child needs to find an inexpensive place to stay and plan for staying in Cologne for two months after her High School graduation in 2010. So far, it is very hard to find hotels in Cologne for a good price that will even house her because of her age. I was wondering that there might be any courteous families or responsible people who may need a roommate for so long so that she can stay for a smaller price? It is her graduation gift from us, we just want her to stay comfortably and have enough room to meet people and have her fun.

You might wish to check with some of the universities in your area. She might be able to travel to Europe in conjunction with a study program. That should help with the logistics, (food, lodging, some travel), get her to some of the sites a bit easier, put her with a group of people near her age, and possibly get her some college credit. If that isn't of interest, you might wish to visit the following web site for some ideas, information, and possible savings: (www.statravel.com). Gary

You are planning about 18 months in advance! Therefore I'm not sure you can you tell exactly what a good price would be, when you don't know what the exchange rate will be for the U.S. dollar at that time! Why can't she stay in a youth hostel (http://www.hostel-cologne.de, http://www.jugendherberge.de/jh/rheinland/koeln-deutz/?m)? You don't actually say how old she will be: there is no reason why people in the rest of the world should know at what age people leave high school in America! Where I live, people don't leave school to go to university till age 18 or 19
Naturally, however, 2 months in a hotel would be expensive, if she is doing a language course in Cologne I would have thought they would help with homestays - although these are not necessarily a cheap option as they often include food as well.

Do a google search for schools in Cologne, check out "Gymnasium". In German that's not a gym, but a school preparing students for college. Write them a letter, address it to the English teacher and ask for a penfriend. Your daughter may get to know soemone through emails/letters and may get to stay there in 2010. The school may even have an exchange program where she could participate.

Some good options and advice. You might also want to check out the website www.belodged.com. 2 months is definitely a long time but you might find someone there.

check this website, maybe you do an own posting which is free of charge:
www.wg-gesucht.de
Most of them are students offering a free room in their flat. living together is pretty common in Germany. And there is the advantage your daughter finds friends pretty soon.
best chris.

If you plan to stay a day or longer in Cologne I hardly recommend to buy a K?ln - WelcomeCard, which is available for 24, 48 or 72 hours.

24h: Single 9 EUR / Group 18 EUR
48h: Single 14 EUR / Group 28 EUR
72h: Single 19 EUR / Group 38 EUR

Available at the Airport, K?ln Tourismus and many hotels. Included are all public transportation, Airport-Transfer with Bus 170, Discount in Museums and Sights, Free K?lsch at some restaurants and much more.

Check it out. It's worth!

1. FC Köln

by IceBear7

The best football team in Cologne is the FC, playing in the 2nd Bundesliga this year (2004/2005). They have a wonderful new stadium - you have to acknowledge that even if you don't come to see the FC but the team the FC is playing. You're really close to the action, great atmosphere - but unfortunately the FC wins ... Crucial equipment for the FC is Hennes, a goat! I heard that he (or better: his predecessors) has been poisened a couple of times by supporters of other teams - to bring the FC some bad luck.

Apparently he enjoyed his walk during the break ... and he brought his team the luck they needed :-(

The ICE train

by benidormone

The ICE train is the German version of the highspeed train. Its a very comfortable way to travel. You even can watch television in the train. The train network is still under construction so its not available everywhere, but from Cologne lots of destinations are allready possible by ICE train.

First thing first

First, one should visit Koeln Tourismus GmbH, the Cologne Tourist Office, which is situated right opposite to the main entrance of the cathedral. There you'll find most helpful stuff you can imagine. They'll inform you about anything you need to know when visiting Cologne, such as, accomodation, museums, exibitions, concerts, events, shopping, etc.
I never book hotel room in advance, it is my style eversince I started my travellings. Most of the times I travel by car, which gives me the opportunity to stop over night in any place I want. I am kinda visual type and like to see the aspect of the hotel fist. Before coming to Cologne, this time by plain, I knew there'll be the big fair starting on Sunday 05.03.06. There are more then 75 hotels in Cologne only and equaly so in the close surroundings of the town, but all of them were sold out except for those where room costs a fortune.
The guys from the picture have help me to find a room in the hotel situated right Am Bollwerk, which is one the most attractive part of the old medieval town.
