My Hotel Of Choice
Although the exterior of the building is totally uninspiring, I have stayed at this hotel twice and am returning next week because it has everything I need as a base for my trips to Cologne. Its greatest asset is the location, right beside Cologne's main railway station and just a short walk from the shops, cathedral and river. Inside, the hotel is welcoming and friendly and the accommodation is comfortable, spotlessly clean and well-equipped. Rooms have coffee/tea making facilites but I've found I've had to ask for them because they're not always in the room on arrival. The hotel also has WiFi internet access, payable direct with the supplier by credit card.
Breakfast is included in the room rate and is plentiful, with hot and cold food served as a buffet. There is a nice bar on the ground floor that serves light meals in the evenings which is an asset for me, as a single traveller, because I don't always feel like going out to restaurants alone.
Rates vary, depending on the time of year and whether there's a conference or event happening in Cologne. I've paid 77 euros per night on one occasion and 120 euros on others... so check on the hotel's website for the best deals.
One word of warning... they are building a new underground line directly outside the hotel and it's currently a MAJOR building site but I haven't found it to be a problem. The hotel windows are pretty soundproof and you can't expect total quiet anyway when you're right beside a huge railway station.
