go SHOPPING at Germany's...
by Krystynn
go SHOPPING at Germany's longest roofed shopping mall right here in this city. I can't think of a better place to shop for German brand products than here. Man, I could hardly believe that German brand names like MCM, Offenbach, Escada etc. is soooo much cheaper in Germany than anywhere else in the world. Fashion gurus, worshippers and wannabes, TAKE NOTE. Photo below: ESCADA's latest Autumm/ Winter collection (taken from their Autumm/Winter 2000 catalogue).
Huge music store
by jayhawk2000 about Saturn
Sprawling over several floors of what was once Europe's tallest skyscraper, the Saturn Music Dome claims to be the continent's biggest music retailer. Personally, I think London's Tower Records is just as big, but I didn't bring my tape measure. And at these prices, who wants to quibble over square footage? There are hundreds of headphones hanging over the racks. Just grab a CD, scan the barcode, and you'll be treated to samples of every track...and in most cases can listen to the entire album. The range of choice is huge, with particularly good classical and jazz sections. There are also plenty of DVDs, hi-fis, sound systems and all sorts.
Plan to spend a couple hours here, but don't plan on spending with your VISA card! We were surprised they wouldn't accept our cards and had to put our purchases back until we could get to a cash machine! Much cheaper than the UK for the same album, but still with English liner notes!
The train station
by croisbeauty
The train station (Hauptbanhof) is situated next to the Cologne Dom and it is pretty good inserted in the ambient. Its roof construction, over the platforms, in a shape of mussels looks attractive.
The whole area and the station itself is always crowded by the people. Most of them are passengers but in the late hours it changes. After ten oclock in the evening it is full of beerlovers.
Local Food
by Carino about Haxenhaus zum Rheingarten
Also recommended by VT-Users and other Travel Books we had dinner at Haxenhaus zum Rheingarten, a local Restaurant right next to the Rhein. It was really packed and we were lucky to catch a table outside.
My dish was allright, but the service kinda sucked.... I had 1/2 Meter Bratwurst with potatoes and Sauerkraut. Especially the potatoes were excellent!
I spent about 14 EUR including a Kölsch.
Christmas market (Weihnachtsmarkt)
by ptitetoile
It is like a small village with a lot of small wooden cabins. There are 4 (I think) christmas markets located in different parts of the city. In most of them you can find all kinds of present for christmas : wooden toys, christmas decoration, candles, etc...
In the christmas market next to the Dom, you will find whatever you want to eat : from the german food (Bratwurst, Pfannekuchen, Spaetzle, Roestli, Gluehwein) to the more exotic one (chinese, mexican).
