When you are there you must go...

When you are there you must go upstairs at 'der Koelner Dom', the cathedral of the city. It´s very easy, more than 500 steps :) The view up there is great, you can see the whole city, the river (der Rhein).
You can also get a boat and travel through the romantic Rhein, and stop in smaller cities, and also more typical ones.

Whoever would like to get to know the city in the gay and lesbian sense should seriously consider a guided tour from the Centre of Gay History, who organises such tours in the historical homo-city of Cologne.
Whoever is more inclined for a little shopping, then Ehrenstrasse is exactly what you need. From clothes to decorations to books and sound equipment, everything is here on this street for all price levels. A little more expensive, but somewhat more exclusive is Mittelstrasse between Rudolfplatz and Neumarkt.
Whoever is afraid to take in all this luxury can be warmly rewarded with Cologne's biggest pedestrain zone on the Hohe Strasse, Schildergasse and Breitestrasse. Cologne's longest shopping street extends over many kilometres between the Cathedral and Neumarkt.
CGN Airport
by jayhawk2000
We used the no-frills airline HLX (now TUIfly) to fly in from Manchester. They were building a train station at the airport plus another new terminal, so it was a bus ride up the motorway to either Koln or Bonn.
Before you leave the terminal drop in at the tourist info desk for a city map and the tourist card which gives you lots of discounts and free transportation throughout the region. It started at 9 euro per person for 24 hours.
It's only about 15 minutes by bus from the airport to central Koln and you'll be dropped off outside the huge city centre train station in the shadow of the cathedral.
NEWSFLASH: As of summer 2004, there is a train station at the airport offering direct services into Koln and around the country.
A taste of German food
by Cristian_Uluru about Klaaf Bistro & Restaurant
Klaaf Bistro & Restaurant is located in the square in front of Eigelsteintor. During the summer season you can seat on the terrace in front of the Medieval town gate and relax yourself with a good beer, or a good cappuccino or with a delicious plate of food. Good music and a friendly staff allow to pass a great evening. My experience in Klaaf Bistro & Restaurant was very positive. Here you can taste German and International dishes with a touch of Italian style. As starter I can suggest to taste one of the best tomato soup I ever eaten (with mais and fresh basil). As main dish I can suggest to taste a delicious Argentinisches Rumpsteak (ca.200 g) served with Kruterbutter, stove potato with sour cream and salad. Another good dish was Penne mit Hähnchenstreifen: Penne (pasta) with chicken strips in spicy tomato.
As drink I suggest to try the Kolsch Beer.

#4711 started making cologne in the late 1700's and made it 80 proof. you were meant to both drink it and wear it. Nowadays, you just wear it.
A fountain in the lobby continuously pours free samples of cologne to try.
The staff are helpful and friendly and there is a free display on the 2nd floor giving a history of the store.
