632 years to build
by Sharrie
Just like this photo, my memory of Cologne Cathedral is very fuzzy. Coupled with the fact that we have just visited Rome, Venice, Florence & Vatican before this made it another Cathedral to keep up with. It somewhat lacks the flamboyance of the Italian basilica & the glorious history behind it.
Nonetheless, it is still an amazing cathedral, one that took 632 years to complete! 632 year!!! Oh my, it's mind-boggling to me! What were those people doing with their time all those years!
Küppers
by richiecdisc
Küppers is one of the breweries that was taken over by the Kölner group so while the beer is still available the small brewery is no longer independently owned. Many people would say it's not a big deal especially if the beer itself is still produced. What they do not think about is how the beer may change or disappear down the road as the big brewery is likely only concerned with sales volume. The independent brewery certainly wants to sell beer too but individual owners may not care about this as much as producing something unique or even something they personally enjoy. If the big breweries take over all of the smaller ones it will not be a good thing for Cologne's beer scene so enjoy the smaller ones while they are there. You may help save a brewery and a very unique part of this great city.
CGN Airport Köln/Bonn
by sabsi
Cologne Airport is Germany's No. 1 no frill-airport nowadays. Carriers such as HLX, Germanwings, Air Berlin or Easyjet have chosen it as one of the main hubs in Germany.
The old airport (which is not really nice but then again.... I won't complain as long as flights stay cheap ;) has recently got a nice new terminal building and a train station finally. Now you can go to several places in ith Germany by ICE trains and to Cologne by S-Bahn. It takes approx. 20 mts from Cologne Hauptbahnhof or Deutz station (S 13 direction Troisdorf), trains leave every 10 minutes.
By car you get here easily from A 59 (exit Flughafen) which is close to Heumar Intersection of A3, A4 and A59.
Dining on the Rhine
by littlesam1
It would just be wrong to spend a day in Cologne and not enjoy a lunch or dinner on the banks of the Rhine. Here, just in front of St. Andrews is a beautiful little out door restaurant. You can enjoy a stein of German bear and watch the Rhine flow in front of you.
Rhine river
by sihi
Rhine river divides the city of Cologne into two. The river flows just through the city centre doing it (city) more beautiful and attractive.
Rhine river was throughout centuries one of the major trade routes in Western Europe and was the foundation of Cologne's commercial importance. Thanks this trade route the city had fast develope.
