Perfect location!

We stayed at the Hotel Domstern for two nights, based on online reviews. Always a bit hesitant when staying at the unknown, but this hotel was awesome!

The hotel is named after the star on top of the Dom - and there are all kinds of unique art pieces on display around the hotel depicting the star.

Located very close to the train station and the famous cathedral, our stay was pleasant. The people at the desk were not only friendly but so very helpful.

We had private parking just across the street in a secure area and the hotel even let us park there on our first day before we officially checked in.

Breakfast each morning was delicious - so much of the meal was homemade and fresh! Definitely plan to stay here again on our next journey to Cologne.

Unique Quality: The location is the best. Once we parked at the hotel, we were able to walk everywhere else. Didn't move the car until it was time to head home. Since it so close to the train station, next time we might just take the train.

A very good choice for once

This turned out to have been a very good choice...

I was travellling by train, I only wanted to see the centre, and I had no car. The hotel was within a very few minutes walking distance of everything I wanted to see (the cathedral & the Wallraf-Richartz museum...), and what's more it was clean, reasonably priced and decent (not always that easy in a big European city near the station). The people on the desk were helpful (e.g. in suggesting somewhere for supper - the Fruhe) and civilised (e.g. discussing Van Eyck). The room I got wasn't big, but it wasn't poky either and I slept well. The lift worked and they gave a good, buffet-type breakfast.

Unique Quality: Not too expensive, decent, and conveniently situated,

A wonderful hotel

%On October 2007 Hotel Domgarten changes name into Hotel Domstern. It is a nice three stars hotel located just 300 meters from the wonderful cathedral of Cologne and only 200 from the railway station. The hotel is located in a nice palace built in 1890 and it has got 16 non smoking rooms. The friendly staff give you a great welcome and he help you to organize your diner and your stay in Cologne.
The hotel has got an own car park (8 euro by day) that you need to book before your arrive.

Unique Quality: Hotel Domstern was very good. My room (a triple room) was on the fourth floor and it was 215 sqft and it is equipped with three single beds. It is airconditioned and offers 2 TV sets, closet and safe box. It has got bathroom with shower and hairdryer.
The breakfast buffet was great: you can choice within several kinds of breads and rolls, cheese and sausages, eggs, Yoghurt, home made Muesli and cereals, fresh fruit and juices as well as daily changing specials.
The staff was very flriendly: he provide information on typical Koelsch breweries as well as very good restaurants in the neighbourhood. He give you information about city walks, excursions, churches, theatre and arts, exhibitions and culture.
It was a great experience!!!

Great location and exceptional service

In May 2008, I stayed at the Hotel Domstern for a total of 3 nights. It is within easy walking distance of the Cologne Hauptbahnoff (central train station) and the Cathedral. Therefore, I was able to get to the hotel from the train station without having to pay for a cab.

The Hotel Domstern was formerly known as the Hotel Domgarten. The hotel was renamed the Hotel Domstern in October 2007. Since the renaming, the hotel has been operated exclusively as a nonsmoking venue. All public areas are also completely smoke free.

The hotel is not luxurious, but it is extremely clean and well-maintained. In addition to the great location, the best feature of this hotel is its terrific service. The staff is professional and friendly -- and they do their best to ensure that you enjoy your stay. On the first evening of my stay, I told them the type of restaurant that I was looking for -- and a member of the staff told me my options and the one that he recommended. Also, when I later asked another staff member about the trains from Cologne to Duesseldorf, he printed the morning's train schedule for me.

In the morning, the hotel has a great breakfast buffet with a great selection. At each table, the staff also provides a small print-out of the day's weather forecast.

In a nutshell, the Hotel Domstern is a wonderful, reasonably-priced hotel in the center of Cologne with outstanding service. Highly recommended!

Unique Quality: Great location -- within easy walking distance of the Cathedral and main train station.

Outstanding service! Very friendly and helpful staff.

Safe deposit box in each room.

More about Hotel Domstern

Small pub on Domstrasse

by BillNJ about Reissdorf-Stübchen

On my first night in Cologne, I stopped for a Reissdorf Kölsch at the Reissdorf-Stübchen which was close to my hotel (Hotel Domstern) on Domstrasse. I sat at the bar in this small, local pub. Over a Kölsch, I had a disjointed conversation with a friendly German. Unfortunately, his grasp of English was not much better than my present grasp of German (which is minimal).

This small pub is a nice local spot, but it is not someplace to which I would go out of my way to find. Decent place to relax over a Kölsch if you are in the neighborhood.

Traditional Kölsch beer house with good food

by BillNJ about Brauhaus Em Kölsche Boor

Upon the recommendation of a staff member at my hotel (Hotel Domstern), I ate dinner at the Brauhaus Em Kölsche Boor on my first night in Cologne. It is one of Cologne's oldest beer houses, and it is located on Eiglestein Strasse in the Altstadt-Nord section. It was only a short walk from my hotel.

I sat at the bar, and I first ordered a Gaffel Kölsch. Then, for dinner, I ordered some Jagerschnitzel that was served with a salad and fries.

For dessert, I had apple strudel with vanilla ice cream. Delicious!

This restaurant delivers a great, authentic Kölsch experience with food, drink, and service that generally exceeds the busier tourist traps near the Cathedral. The food portions are large, and the Gaffel Kölsch is great. Highly recommended! Gaffel Kölsch - one of my favorite varieties
