Railway Bridge at HBF

by kilw

who are the statues at each side of the bridge?

RE: Railway Bridge at HBF

by abalada

Hohenzollernbrücke
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/HohenzollernbrCcke

the statues are rulers from the house of Hohenzollern
Deutz side
- Friedrich Wilhelm IV. of Prussia
- Kaiser Wilhelm I.
Cologne/cathedral side
- Kaiser Friedrich III.
- Kaiser Wilhelm II.

After the defeat of Napoleon, Cologne was occupied by Prussia and became part of a Prussian province (before it was an independet "free" city).
And here (and other ocassions) the Prussian wanted to make sure, that the people of Cologne won't forgot the "benifits" (here: this bridge) the Prussian occupation brought them.

Travel Tips for Cologne

Leave your luggage

by ettenaj

We were quite suprise to be able to leave our luggage at the train station in a very secure luggage container. It seemed like magic to see our bags going into a box the door closing and when it opened again the bags had gone!!! The bags can be retrieve from any one of the luggage containers on the station, this is a great way to get rid of heavy luggage if you are only spending a few hours in the city and want to be free of bags. All this costs only 3 euro for upto 24 hours.

English Products

by AnnS about The English Shop

While you're staying in Cologne, if you start pining for Marmite, crave a cup of PG Tips or just want to buy a British magazine, help is on hand in the form of a shop, right in the city centre, that sells a wide range of British products. I came upon in by accident when I looked down a side street and saw a large Union Jack flag. Further investigation revealed a little shop which at first glance, looked as if it was just selling tacky British souvenirs but inside it is a small supermarket, rather like a corner store, and the range of products on offer is impressive... everything from Pot Noodles to jars of Petroleum Jelly.

Travelling to Cologne with Hapag Lloyd Express

by stefank60

I travelled to Cologne on Hapag Lloyd Express - my 1st ever flight on a no frills carrier , so I was not sure what to expect.

The outward flight was delayed by one hour . In flight was very good indeed and in fact I would say there was more leg room than in economy class on a scheduled airline.

Aircraft used both ways was a 737 - modern and clean. snacks and drinks can be bought on board. The flight was non eventful and the landing in Cologne the harshest I have ever experienced though I believe airlines tend to do this these days.

The airport at Cologne is very smart and modern and spacious.

A new rail service ( S-bahn line S13) started on 13 June 2004 so I was lucky in the timing of this.

The journey time to the Hauptbanhof (main station) was approx 15 minutes.

The return flight was similarly uneventful and this time only a delay of about 5/10 minsutes with a near as makes no difference on time arrival.

The fare from Manchester to Cologne was £ 63.

I would highly recommend Hapag Lloyd Express.

Own beer!

by bonio about Paffgen

Had a marvellous lunch here - portions are huge - quality great. Friendly staff, only ones to explain what halve hahn was - we knew by then! but they translated the rest of the menu too. Plus they brew the beers on the premesis - Try it - it's a good one! Another "borrowed" photo, had a bad day with my camera that day, could it be too much kolsch? probably!

Town Hall

by Leipzig

The city hall dates from 1330 but has a tower from the 15th century and a Renaissance facade from the 16th century. The town hall was badly destroyed in 1945 and it took eleven years before it was rebuilt to its former glance.
