You'll find Cologne to be very...

You'll find Cologne to be very manageable. Everything is conveniently located in the shadows of the great Cathedral. Although, let's face it, the entire state of Nordrhein-Westfalen is in the shadows of the great Cathedral.
The beverage of choice in these parts is Kölsch, a light golden lager served in teeny little glasses. It's not bad, but not really my style. I'm more of a dark, malty beer kind of guy, but in the summertime, Kölsch does well in a pinch.
What to buy on the christmas market?
by Helga67
Christmas markets in Germany sell good stuff. Very often hand-made or special to the occassion. At the christmas market you will find a lot of small hand-made gifts made of ceramic: christmas ornaments: balls, christmas stable and figures, ... but also goodies like delicious cookies or candy.
the Subway & trams will get you there...
by danmcf
Whether you've come in via Train, or you've wisely parked your car, the Subway will get you where you need to go.
In the center, it's a subway; as you get further form the center, it becomes a tram. You'll find a good route map at most stations, and there's a ticket vending machine in the Tram once you enter.
Good beer and food in traditional brewhouse
by FrostyJW about Paffgen Brauhuas
Paffgen Brewhouse is some distance from the main tourist area, but if you are a beer/kolsch fan, then this is a must visit. You can walk from the Dom Square, would take about 20-25 minutes (but take a map) or you can get the U Bahn to Friesenplatz. The beer is probably the best example of Kolsch, light and crisp slightly more 'hoppy' than most, so has a more bitter aftertaste, but the glass seems to empty even quicker than usual. Waiting staff very good, and our waiter was very friendly and joked with us, and did speak a little English. Food menu is very good, but only in German.
There are 4 or 5 traditional style rooms and a beer garden at rear, with sliding glass panels in the roof to keep the rain out, or if it is cold. Paffgen Kolsh is probably the best example of its kind in Cologne. Food was very good, we had goulash soup and it was excellent and good value. The menu is comprehensive and what we saw come out the kitchen looked good. Though you may need help in translating what is on the menu (see web site for details)
Get inSPIREd by this Gothic masterpiece.........

Right from the moment you step out of the train station, the spires of this gigantic cathedral hold your attention. When you are walking the shores of the Rhine near the Rhein-garten or people watching near the busy Am Hof, the cathedral forms a majestic backdrop for this once powerful medieval city.
Entrance is on the side closest to the train station. Free. Hours are 6am to 7pm every day, although when i visited (saturday before easter), it was open well past 8pm.
The cathedral was begun in 1248, but it took until 1880 to complete it. After being completly bombed in WWII, it took some major reconstruction to restore the cathedral to it's previous majesty. The great bell of the south tower called the Kaiserglocke, which was originally a french cannon captured during the Franco Prussian war, is one of the largest in the world. The cathedral is most famous for it's shrine of the Magi, which is reputed to contain the bones of the 3 wise men who brought gifts to the infant baby Jesus.
