Variety of Architecture
by diocletianvs
Sabsi and I were walking along the Rhine and Sabsi wanted to show me the building she thought was very nice. So we arrived to the place that is close to the Fish Market and Sabsi said - voila!
It was indeed a very nice building - nothing special, just a narrow house probably build after the WWII on a place of some old destroyed building. The modernist windows were stretching on the whole lenghts of the facade and curtainless windows even enabled the peeks into some of the nicely decorated interiors.
As I was taking the photographs Sabsi asked me - "The shutters look really nice, don't they?".
Shutters? What shutters?
To my horror I realized that the building she wanted to show me was the most kitchy thing in Cologne with colorful Bavarian shutters, smallish windows and the ugliest and kitchiest lights on the facade. We of course started laughing, and agreed we won't discuss tastes any more. Variety is a good thing and Cologne certainly offers something for everybody. (We continued our explorations looking for modernist building I had found before and some of them were discovery even for Sabsi - like the Museum for Eastern Art or Die Bastei).

Cars, trains, yes even by air
by Pavlik_NL
Köln is easily to reach by train and car. Tip if you come by car: follow the parkingroute and you surely will find a spot to leave the car. It also has it's own airport.
The town has a simple, but efficient U-bahn (=subway)system that will bring you anywhere you want to go.
Try some currywurst
by BillNJ about Olaf's Imbiss
I had my first experience with currywurst at Olaf's Imbiss. It is not a sit-down restaurant; rather, it is a small fast food place where you can eat at the counter or take your food to go. For a reasonable price, stop in and enjoy some great currywurst or bratwurst. Currywurst and a roll
Kölner Dom
by Redlats
The Kölner Dom or Cologne Cathedral is the spectacular church in downtown Köln. It is so huge that it is difficult to take a picture of the whole church - this picture was taken from across the river.
You can go inside the church to view the stained glass windows and detailing. I have read some of the other VT pages on the Dom, and they say that it took over 600 years to build the church. There must have been a huge amount of work that was devoted to the detailing of the church - the carving, etc.
Unfortunately the inside of the church is not ideal if you are a parishioner - too many large columns interfere with sightlines of parishioners and there are always an awful lot of tourists.
You can climb one of the two towers (see next tip for details).
The church's website (click below) is in German and has pictures of the detail inside the church.
