Walk along the Rhine
by diocletianvs
Rhine is an impressive river - with its 1,320 kilometres it is one of the longest European rivers. It was always a natural limit (Rhine formed most of the northern frontier of the Roman Empire) but also an important waterway for the goods and trade.
After Bonn (a bit upstream from Cologne) the Rhine leaves the Rhine Gorge, known for its many castles and vineyards and when it reaches Cologne it touches the large industrial area of Ruhr where its strong economic potentials come first.
Cologne was always an important crossing over the Rhine, and it is no suprise that it embraces its river with impressive river banks, quays and walkways ideal for walking and watching the city skyline.
The 3rd tallest building in Cologne!
by maykal
I can't imagine many visitors to Cologne see the view from the third tallest building, but there are good viewing platforms on the 44th and 43rd floors. Trouble is, you need a key to be let in the lift doors, and there are no stairs, but if you speak German and are willing to try talking your way in, go to Weisshausstrasse on the underground - it should be fairly obvious which is the third tallest building in Cologne when you get off the train, so I won't bother with directions!!!
Public transport
by Sjalen
Cologne has a great system of buses, trams and U-Bahn (trams running as U-Bahn). See the site below for your own personal transport planner. You can buy day cards or a set of several tickets to see you through your visit.
Great location
by bonio about Fruh am dom
Right next to the Dom, very busy as you'd expect but not just for tourists, good local trade too it appeared. Prices are not silly either. Excellent kolsch here - didn't have anything to eat - but it looked good, you can't eat at every bar on a pub crawl can you?
