Any information on the measles outbreak in Cologne and other cities?

by nomad7890

We're thinking about traveling to Cologne and Mainz at the end of July.
Just read an article that there had been 1,200 cases of measles reported in Cologne and two other World Cup cities (sorry, don't recall the other two) - this is a total for the three cities, not just Colgone.

Could any of the area locals provide any info/status on these news? Thanks!

There seem to be some cases of measles. It startet in Nordrhein-Westfalen in May and seem to have spread to Niedersachsen, Schleswig-Holstein, Berlin and Oberbayern (but too a much smaller amount). Almost all the afflicted are children (infected in school i guess). French and US authorities recommended vaccination before travel to germany.

If you attended US public school, you are probably vaccinated already. Most schools require measles vaccination before you can attend. If you don't know or can't find your records, call your doctor and get a vaccination before you go. It's a good idea anyway because we have the occasional outbreak here too.

Thank you ... I will think this over. May be best to postpone until next year - I did have other stops planned.

Travel Tips for Cologne

German beer

by fairy_dust

Apparently, Cologne is well-known for its beers. Unfortunately, my group didn't get to sample a lot of beers because we had to follow a silly no-drinking rule, but my friend Neal and I managed to sample a glass (actually, he drank 3 quarters of it and I finished off the last quarter). Here's the story:

My friends and I and some of the chaperones were eating supper in a restaurant and the waiter (who couldn't speak much English and accidentally called the garden salad "garbage salad"! We all had a good laugh over that!) tried to persuade us to order beer. Because of the no-drinking rule, we didn't order it. But later he brought two glasses of beer - one for himself and another for our priest. The priest refused to drink it so we ended up making Neal drink it. Neal couldn't finish it so I did.

Cologne City Centre

The shops in Cologne are fabulous! There are so many shops selling almost everything that you could possibly imagine..the pedestrian areas in the main part of the city are even packed with window shoppers during the evening and even more crammed during the shopping hours.

It seems that hardly any shops if any are open on a Sunday, generally the hours are Monday to Saturday.

There is a huge selfmade chandelier at the ceiling, styled with a lot of plastic things from a kitchen etc.
Breakfast : You have to cross out on a special paper what you would like to have and you can order it all by itself....Good idea ! They even sell a single cigarette for nearly-non-smokers! Breakfast

Check the list of cybercafes in Cologne!
If, like me, you need to use the Internet, either to read your mail, find something important on the WWW, or just chat with your friends, you can do it in Cologne in one of the several cybercafes available.

You can find a list of them following this link:
