RE: how can i get to Bonn

by abalada

Cheapest way Frankfurt Airport to Bonn:
Direct IC via Koblenz is EUR 31,00.
If not travelling alone: with local trains (S-Bahn, RB, RE)
a) RMV ticket Frankfurt Airport to Mainz Hbf: EUR 3,35 pp
b) Rhineland-Palatinate Ticket from Mainz Hbf to Bonn Hbf: EUR 23,00 for 1-5 persons
(You can use this combination also as a single person, but with EUR 26,65 it's only slightly cheaper than the faster IC train.)

Cologne and Bonn are both inside the same local public transport network - the VRS.
With a VRS ticket (price level 4 for Bonn to Cologne) you can travel from any train/tram/bus stop in Bonn to any train/tram/bus stop in Cologne.
Single ticket is EUR 6,10. Day ticket EUR 13,30.

With a VRS ticket you can use the RE and RB trains from Bonn to Cologne. Or one of the 2 Stadtbahn (tram) lines connecting both cities.
train and tram network of the VRS

Jolly Hotel Media Park Cologne
Closest Stadtbahn stop: Christophstr./Mediapark
Closest train stations: Köln West (RB,RE) or Köln Hansaring (RB)
Both approx. 750 m from the hotel.

Travel Tips for Cologne

Never eat anything larger than your head

by garridogal

This being said, the bread pictured here should ONLY be purchased for family use! Was told by one of the VT'ers I met that it's rock hard. Somehow I don't find that hard to believe.

Atkins dieters beware. You WILL be offended!

Christmas Market in Cologne

by kentishgirl

The Christmas market in Cologne is very famous...unfortunatley we missed it by a few weeks, I was told that it starts towards the end of November through until Christmas.

In the Dom area the stall were being prepared, I imagine that when ut actually opens the scene is spectacular!

Oh, well....always an excuse to visit Cologne again!

It looks like the train is very popular transporting means in Cologne and very well organized. Every minute or so there are trains in departing and ariving to the station. The local trains, coloured in red, are very frequent and punctual.

Another Brewery Pub with more cons than pros

by RhineRoll about Peters Brauhaus

One of our recent Cologne VTmeetings took us to Peters Brewery house. Despite the food being edible, Peters is another element in a long row of Brewery house visits failing to convince me they are a good place to have dinner. On the positive side, the interior was nice and there was a handicap toilet, even though it was doubling up as the staff attendance room in need of clearance (and cleanup) when I wanted to use it. The food was ok but did not make it out of the mediocricy category. Service yet again was slow, grumpy and unattentive. You might argue that this is the way it's supposed to be in a real Kölsch Brewery house... maybe so, but I just don't like it that way -- tradition is nice, but bad traditions should be discontinued instead of perpetuated. Neither did I like the terrible air quality in some of the interior rooms. Operating a smoking ban would help a lot.

Menu with English language subtitles. Also good for Germans who are not familiar with the local dialect dish names. Ah yes, I almost forgot. Their Kölsch was one of the most sluggish ones I've ever tasted. Not recommended for tasting.

Walking Tour of Central Cologne

by cvsolfari

If you have the chance to spend a few days in Cologne, like most cities, it's worth it to go for a walking tour around the central city area. Although Cologne suffered much damage in WWII, there are many landmarks that were rebuilt and therefore offer points of interest around town.
