A quick pretzel or kuchen
There are many Merzenich shops around providing fresh bread, pretzels and "kuchen".
Some of the shops have seating areas as well.
Do'n't carry food around when in Cologne; there's enough fresh food around.

View from Cologne Cathedral
I am coming to Cologne in August with Easyjet and will be catching the airport bus into the centre.
Does anyone know where the bus stops in the centre, and can anyone recommend a hotel (around E70 per night for 2 people per night, preferably with breakfast included) that is within walking distance of this?
How long a stay in Cologne would be recommend to see the major sights? Is it a big city? How far apart are the main sites? Are these within walking distance? How safe is the city for females, particularly at night? Are there any 'no-go' areas that should be avoided?
Sorry so many questions, but hope to hear some replies.
Thank you
There is no airport bus to Cologne any more. since 2 years ago there is a train connection (S-Bahn) from the airport to the main station. The main station is a centrally as it only gets, right in the shadows of the cathedral.
>Is it a big city? How far apart are the main sites?
About 1 Mio people. But the center is rather compact and walkable, plus a dense network of subway/trams that gets you anywhere outside of the center.
>How safe is the city for females, particularly at night?
As safe as any big city, and saer than many others.

Do you think Cologne is in Papua New Guinea or what?
You don't have to think it is New Guinea just because you wonder where is safe. I for one would say that the Central station is not that nice at night although I have never felt threatened or unsafe - it just feels unpleasant. But as soon as you have left the area immediately outside the station (which is fine by day!) everything is fine as then the cathedral area take over. I haven't stayed in a hotel in the city yet (will do soon as my cousin has no room for all her wedding guests) but the www.cityclass.de has cheap hotels near here. Looking at internet reviews of CityClass, you get very different opinions...
We're off to Cologne at Bank Holiday and booked the City Class am Dom. It's cheap and central. Try the Hotel Reservation Services website and it will identify the costs and offers they have as well as showing where the various hotels are in relation to the centre. We'll use the s-bahn connection rather than the bus. As far as safety is concerned I wouldn't worry. Like any big city the area immediately round the railway station can be dodgy but nowhere near as bad as British stations. Germany is a very freindly and welcoming place as evidenced by all the fans who went to the World Cup. I'm sure you'll enjoy it. I wouldn't say Cologne is packed with sights but there are plenty of places to head for by train down the Rhine depending how long your trip is. Climbing the tower in the cathedral is a must. Drinking as much Kolsch as you can is another!

An electronics/music/movies store selling TVs, cameras, hi-fis, electronics, CDs and DVDs at affordable prices. A decent assortment of DVDs and CDs.
You can buy American and British movies on DVD and switch over to the original English version if you've got a multi-region player. You'll often see the same numbers as on the British product, but you're paying euros and saving a mint. A Candi Staton CD cost 18 euro...in the UK it's 18 pounds!
Lupi is a small VW car that reminds to colorful Trabants, has no space for luggage but has a flower vase with plastic flowers on its windscreen. Lupi flies on autobahns without taking off and if the policeman is not around can even fit into the passenger elevator from an underground car park ;)
Oh, did I tell you that Lupi has the owner as well? Her name is Frau Sabsi and she took me anywhere I wanted in Cologne and around and even allowed me to scrape the ice off the Lupi windscreen that I enjoyed very much ;)
Thank you Lupi, thank you Frau Sabsi!
We really wanted to eat at one of the restaurants with outdoor seating on the Rhine and this was the one we picked. The sun was shining on us as we grabbed the seats closest to the building on the picnic style table. However, we had to keep moving closer to the edge to follow that sun as it kept moving behind the table!
As I said, I know that this is a very touristy place but the view and the outdoor seating in the sun were worth it and I really enjoyed the old fashioned brewhouse feel of the place when I went inside. I had the 1/2 meter Bratwurst (Impressed now, aren't ya?) and Bryan had the Schnitzel. I actually, didn't care for mine very much when I took the first bite but it did "grow" on me. (Boy is that fodder for a joke or what?) But I did like Bryan's schnitzel much more....
Standing on the shore of the Rhine River facing the city you can see the immense St. Andrews towering over a row of attractive buildings and an out door restaurant. Here you can sit and watch the Rhine while you have a relaxing lunch and still have the beautiful buildings just behind you.
