 | Hyatt Regency Cologne: Lap of Luxury

I only spent one night in Cologne during my two years in Germany, but it was a spectacular night for many reasons: it was the Saturday of Fasching (Carnival/Mardi Gras) before Fat Tuesday in 2000, we stayed at the wonderful Hyatt Regency, and we spent the night in the Presidential Suite! The Hyatt Regency is ideally located in Cologne, directly across the Rhine from the famous Cologne Cathedral. Many of the rooms overlook the river and the Cathedral offering amazing views. Immediately beside the hotel is the train bridge over the river with a pedestrian path leading straight to the cathedral and old town only about 10-15 minutes away by foot. The Presidential Suite was amazing! It had about seven beds in three different rooms, along with a dining room, library, sauna, fully stocked bar, and a grand piano. The suite was L-shaped on the corner of the building, so most areas had a scenic view. Our trip was in February 2000, just months after US President Bill Clinton's June 1999 visit to Germany for the G-8 Summit... yes, we stayed in the very same suite where the President and his family resided during their visit. This suite will cost around US$1500 or more, unless you do like we did... use about one million frequent flier miles and split the remaining cost among about 15 of your best friends! Don't worry, though, other rooms at the Hyatt are as low as US$180 per night.
