Excellent all Around

My husband and I were only staying one night in Cologne, so we decided to splurge a little with this hotel (around 200USD/night, but we got a discount through Expedia). I couldn't have been any more pleased! Our stay was fantastic. The rooms are every bit as luxurious as they appear in the online photos, and the rest of the hotel is absolutely beautiful. Everything was clean, well organized and efficient. We booked online, and had no problems at check in. The staff spoke excellent English and made us feel very welcome.

The hotel's location is ideal. It sits directly across the river from Kolner Dom, providing an excellent view. The walk from the train station took about five minutes (literally, you leave the station, walk across the gorgeous Hohenzollern Bridge, and the hotel is the first building on the right). Being across the water from the city center meant that we didn't experience any problems with noise from either the trains or from the tourist areas.

My only complaint was that internet service isn't complimentary (for the price, you'd expect it to be included). But in this city, that is the norm. The Hyatt Regency provides 30 minutes of free wireless internet to guests, and then charges either a 24 hr rate (less than 20 euro, but I can't remember exactly how much), or 3 euro per additional hour, whichever suits you best.

Unique Quality: It's the little things that really set this hotel apart...the fluffy robes, the extra toiletries provided, the over-stocked mini bar, the view, the scale provided in the bathroom, the complimentary fruit and bottled water, the convenient ATM in the lobby.

The hotel also has a fitness center and pool, for those interested, and an outdoor restaurant.

On the right bank of the Rhine ..

The Hyatt Regency is a typical Business/Congress Hotel with all the necessary amenities and comfortable, big rooms. From the 6th level panaroma window you have a fine view on the Cologne panorama with the Cathedral and the Hohenzollern Bridge. The location is excellent - the Kölner Dom/Cathedral is just a short walk over the Hohenzollern Bridge away. P.S.: I stayed there on behalf of my company, normally it would have been a bit out ouf my budget with a double room at roughly 160,- €.

Great views of the Cathedral and the Rhine

I didn't stay at this hotel, so I don't have personal knowledge of its rooms and services. However, the city bus tour made a stop near it -- so that we could take photos of the Cathedral from an adjacent promenade.

If your main concern is to have a gorgeous view of the Cathedral from across the Rhine River, then book a room here with that request. There is probably no other hotel in the city that can offer such a spectacular view.

A great view and some tea.

The service was outstanding. The staff was very helpful, and exceeded expectations. Rooms were flawless and always perfect. Free tea provided in room. Just all around exceptional. A sanctuary after spending weeks on the go.

Lap of Luxury

I only spent one night in Cologne during my two years in Germany, but it was a spectacular night for many reasons: it was the Saturday of Fasching (Carnival/Mardi Gras) before Fat Tuesday in 2000, we stayed at the wonderful Hyatt Regency, and we spent the night in the Presidential Suite!

The Hyatt Regency is ideally located in Cologne, directly across the Rhine from the famous Cologne Cathedral. Many of the rooms overlook the river and the Cathedral offering amazing views. Immediately beside the hotel is the train bridge over the river with a pedestrian path leading straight to the cathedral and old town only about 10-15 minutes away by foot.

The Presidential Suite was amazing! It had about seven beds in three different rooms, along with a dining room, library, sauna, fully stocked bar, and a grand piano. The suite was L-shaped on the corner of the building, so most areas had a scenic view.

Our trip was in February 2000, just months after US President Bill Clinton's June 1999 visit to Germany for the G-8 Summit... yes, we stayed in the very same suite where the President and his family resided during their visit.

This suite will cost around US$1500 or more, unless you do like we did... use about one million frequent flier miles and split the remaining cost among about 15 of your best friends! Don't worry, though, other rooms at the Hyatt are as low as US$180 per night.

My recommendation...

I can heartily recommend the Hyatt which, if it is good enough for Madonna, is good enough for me!!! Only joking....I slept on the floor in my friend's flat with eight others, rivalling the cathedral tower for crampedness. It was in a huge tower block in the suburbs of Cologne, quite a local landmark as it is by far the tallest building in the area...the views were great!
