Dublin to Cologne
by ceatharlach
Can anyone advise me on flights from Dublin to Cologne? Is there a direct flight or are they all via London? Many thanks

I haven't found any direct flights to Cologne, though there are some to nearby cities.
Aer Lingus flies to Düsseldorf (60 km away), where there is a train station at the airport, with direct trains to Köln.
Ryanair flies to Frankfurt-Hahn (180 km away), with direct buses from Hahn airport to Köln.

Looks as if there are no direct flights in winter. Remain the options via LHR or Frankfurt. If you select Frankfurt, the leg Frankfurt - Cologne is in any case by train.
Selecting Lufthansa, the leg FRA - Cologne (CGN) is part of your ticket (price) and will bring you in 55min (highspeed train) directly into the city center of Cologne.
With other airlines you might be required to book your train ticket from FRA - CGN individually via Bahn.de Here you have two options: Highspeed (fast + more expensive) or alongside the Rhine river (takes more time + less expensive)

Germanwings offers direct flights from Dublin to Cologne during the summer timetable.
Ryanair offers flights all year long to Frankfurt-Hahn. From there you can get a bus to Cologne. The bus trip ia approx. 2h15m and costs 15 €.

Travel Tips for Cologne
Tourist Information
by sabsi
The tourist information has recently moved from a place next to the cathedral to another place next to the cathedral. It's now located between the station and the Alt Köln brewpub.
As usual in Germany these days you have to buy a map here. You could also go upstairs to get a free one along with a free shopping guide on Cologne but that's a big tourist trap as there's some nice souvenirs you can buy there ;)
Sales or Use Tax
by keeweechic
In Germany, a 16% value-added tax (Mehrwertsteuer - MwSt) is already reflected in the prices of most goods and services; the MwSt rate on books is 7%. Tourists living outside the European Union are eligible for a refund for most of the tax paid on gifts or souvenirs. Make sure you get a Tax-Free form from the store at the time of your purchase. This form should be filled out with your receipt attached. At your final departure from the European Union you must show the completed forms and the items you purchased to customs authorities who will stamp the documents. (Do not put the corresponding items in your checked luggage.) You can then claim your refund immediately through the private company Europe Tax Free Shopping, which has offices at all airports, major road borders and ferry stations.

Train

Cologne's Central station, the Haupbahnhof, is one of Germany's busiest stations and you will find not only the local S-bahn trains and regional trains here, but also high speed ICE trains to other German parts as well as high speed trains to Brussels and several night trains to for instance Moscow, Basel, Paris and Copenhagen.
Maredo

This restaurant is a chain and I saw at least two across the city.
It has a Mexican/South American theme, and offers a vast menu at very reasonable prices.
The food is ok, its fairly cheap and they have offers on and a buffet salad bar! The dessert menu was amazing, in fairness I ate chicken and it wasnt too good, but my hubby enjoyed a steak and some of the other meals being served around us looked wonderful!
Kölner Dom (Cologne Cathedral)
by SurfaceTravel
This cathedral has been around for 758 years. You can climb the 509 steps up to the top of the southern tower, which is 157.31 m high. From here you obviously get great views of the city, but you also see the architecture of the spires close up, which is quite interesting.
The treasures in the cathedral are amazing, especially the Shrine of the Three Holy Kings. The bones of the Three Kings (who attended Jesus' birth, the first pilgrims) are inside the gold shrine. The wooden Gero Crucifix, circa 970, is also interesting. It is the oldest monumental cross depicting a Jesus who is dead. It also lacks the crown of thorns that appear in later depictions. Be sure to take a guided tour to fully appreciate everything in the Dom.
Admission to the treasure chamber is €4/€2 adults/children; to the tower €2/€1, combined €5/€2.50.
