In 1950, this was about the only option available to us. But it was very convienent to both the Cathedral and the railroad station. It still is.
In those days it was just the "Dom Hotel" (not the Le Meridian). My mother saw it again on a trip about 15 years later and she said it had certainly changed and was much fancier.

There are hotels with very good service then there are others with great service. The Dom Hotel provide the most exceptional service of any hotel I have stayed at in Europe. Starting from their welcome to the room it is all exceptional first class. First off the location is within direct sight of the Cologne Cathedral, just across the square. The train station is a three to four minute walk from the hotel. Paricularly great during the frequent rains in Cologne during the spring.
The room we had was on the first floor had a large balcony with picture access to the cathedral. Very clean with the best of toiletries. It was very spacious and the furnishings were very well constructed and fitted the room perfectly. The room which I paid for with Starwood Points and cash was exceptionally large and first rate. Nice new furnishings in a large classy room. However what sets this hotel apart from others is the exceptional concierge service and general manager. The three concierges went out of their way to help us with every reservation and piece of information about how to get to different places in Cologne and the Rhine Valley. They printed out the schedules and gave detailed directions, pointed out what to see, and how to get back at night. They were all first rate. I wish i would have kept the names of the three different males that provided assistance to us during the two days we stayed there to give them adequate credit. In addition, there is nothing too small to ask the general manager to do. My only fear is that as good as he is he will leave the hotel for one of the larger facilites in Europe. He trains his staff well and it shows! There is also free internet service at the hotel and three computers available for desks. I never had any problems using the internet and staying on as long as I like. The only negative about the hotel is there is not an on-site gym or fitness center at the facility and the price of food and drinks in the hotel is very expensive. However the concierges were more than happy to point out places that catered to any budget. Please check out this hotel if you like a great location and exceptional service. Definitely the best of the Le Meridien chain I have stayed in during trips to Europe. Bravo.
Directions: Impossible to miss. Next to the Cathedral and minutes away from the train station. The actual hotel is on a street corner
We stayed fo a nite. Great experiance abiet expencive.
Unique Quality: Right next to the Dom,our room had view of the platou & the Dom.
I didn't stay at this hotel, so I don't have personal knowledge of its rooms and services. However, I passed it many times because it is right next to the Cathedral. I have seen other reviews that it is a wonderful hotel. It certainly is beautiful from the outside. So, if you want to stay in style right next to the Cathedral, this is the place.
Unique Quality: Right next to the magnificent Cathedral
mother decided to treat us to a proper hotel since she would be living in my flat in arsch der welt fo the rest of the week. Dom hotel is situated....at the dom. it was all very nice with lobby men and porters, i didnt pay so i dont know what price but i dont think it was that dear. the rooms are nice with an imperial style bathroom, wide flat screen tv with sky and a good view of the dom.
the restaurant and bar were good too, breakfast is a buffet style with everything - cereal, slamon, sausages etc, and champagne if you want. it is eaten in the restuarant which has a glass roof like a conservatory which looks onto the dom, a lovely place to stock up for a day of shopping.
Unique Quality: the view!!
Directions: THE DOM!!
No, I did not stay in this hotel, I imagine that it would be way out of my budget!! But, if you can afford it...go for it!
Unique Quality: The hotel was located in the very scenic area of the Dom, its just opposite and so the location is fantastic!
Luxury hotel on top location overlooking the cathedral. The hotel is located in the historical centre and a short walk from the border of the Rhine.
Unique Quality: Luxury with capital L.
Unique Quality: This is probably the oldest hotel in Cologne, it has been one of the finest hotels in the city for almost 150 years (it was built in 1852).
It's one of those old hotels where you can still feel a different style... A different soul... Most of modern hotels, although comfortable and full of facilities, lack what the Dom-Hotel has - a truly human touch, with people that care for you, that know your name, with an atmosphere quite of its own.
In some aspects, it bears the marks of time - the rooms have no air conditioning, for instance, only a fan (if you catch some of Cologne's hottest days, you will probably think of this as a major inconvenience), but I still think that it is a unique experienc to be here.
It's probably one of the top hotels I've been to.

The hotel is located in the square by the Cathedral. You can't miss it... :)
Unique Quality: true German quality within walking distance of some of the best of Cologne. If you can afford it and only have one hotel for Cologne this is the one. I stayed here on my first visit before I moved to this area and then a few other times.
Directions: Center City, near the Central Train Station and the Cathedral (Kolner Dom)
........past "Dom" Hotel ..........
Will be in Cologne for about 8 hours. Of course will go to cathedral and old town - but what other things worth seeing in Cologne. Recommendations of good cheap places for lunch too please
Thanks
Mick
definitely check out the chocolate musuem :)
I did a similar day trip to Cologne a couple of years ago, so please feel free to check out my VT Cologne page for some ideas etc.

I also think the chocolate museum is worth seeing. You can also do a walking tour to see the various landmarks in the city.
I've heard that the Roman Museum and the Zoo/Aquarium are also worth visiting.

depends on what you like, of course. During nice weather you'll find the Dom (Cathedral), the archaeological museum next to it, and the Old Town (Altstadt) which is just a few blocks away to be well worth visiting. I can't say they are particularly cheap but I'd visit the Fruh or Gaffel brewhauses for lunch. They are not expensive and they are "true Cologne!" The Fruh is very near the Dom, just behind the Dom Hotel. I will visit there next weekend when I've planned a train layover in Cologne!
thanks guys - was there once before for about 2 hours so have an idea - but dont want to waste the day looking for stuff - especially with such helpful experts on hand!
Definitely find a brauhaus for lunch. The ones around the dom are all very good. The Chocolate museum is a fun tour. I missed the archaelogy museum but wish to see it on my next trip to Cologne.
