Postcard to my Daughter from Koln am Rhein
by grandmaR
In 1964, when I left my children with my mother and went to meet my husband's ship in Europe, I sent periodic postcards to my daughter.
This one had two 20 DM stamps ..
Dear Daughter
We are going to see this church this morning. So far we haven't left the airport. I was one of the first through customs. I showed my passport, identified my bag, and had nothing to declare. If the Poste opens before we leave, I'll mail this.

Mustard included on your plate
by BillNJ
This tip may apply to more of Germany than just Cologne. During my trip, some eateries just assumed that I wanted mustard and included it on my plate. So, don't be surprised if a big gob of mustard is included on your plate even if you didn't ask for it.

Shamrock off Barbarossaplatz also The Corkman in the Altstadt.
Going out..... well I had to mention that bit..:) Well if you're a boozer, you wont get parched, thats for sure. Try the local brew called Kölsch. It comes in an eloganted version of a half-pint glass, but easier to hold and knock back than the Munich Maßen. Koelsch makes a lovely Radler. On it's own, it's like Carling or maybe Fosters but not as tongue-piercingly sharp. Lots of bars down by Barbarossaplatz if you fancy doing a pub crawl casual
Zero points on my list

Due to a bad weather conditions in Cologne, I've broke my rules and first evening had diner in the hotel restaurant. Besides, the guy told me the restaurant offers good Italian cuisine. Btw, the weiter was Italian and I've followed his advice but then he went off before I've finished my dinner. The next day, after my lamentation, he was smaller then the mouse. It was 10:00PM when I entered in the empty restaurant (see the picture), and that should be always a good sign for alert. On the other hand, it was snowing outside and I wasn't in mooth to get out.
Anyhow, I ordered grilled medallions with moushrooms and potatoes. The meat was as hard as the sole of my shoe. Something bad as that I haven't eat for ages. Oh yes, I paid 23,00 Euros!
See all the markets. There are a few!!

Cologne Christmas Markets
When visiting Cologne for the Christmas markets, make sure you see them all. We counted at least 5 different, large markets around the city centre and outskirts. To me the best one was located just behind the cathedral and difficult to miss. A great, friendly atmosphere, great music from local buskers and plenty of Gluwhein. When buying the hot Gluwhein (many different flavours available), you pay a deposit on the mug. You can then either keep it or take it back for a refund. I think it was 2euro. I kept mine as a souveneir.
Also try the slightly smaller market at Rudolfplatz, which is also surrounded by nice, late night bars where the local always make you welcome.
