I imagine it will be screen erected on the plateau next to the Dom (Chatedral) in cologne...Or try the beer caffees and pubs in the old quarter by the river Rhine. every of them will have TV outside (providing weather is nice) for the ppl to relax and drink +watch the finals...
Here in Aachen every time Germany played, huge screen was deposited in front of the Rathause for everybody to watch the game, although it didn't help them when they lost to Serbia ;-)

Public viewing in Cologne is in and in front of the Lanxess Arena. It opens 3 h before kick-off. Nothing is published yet for Sunday. But it will for sure take place, if GER is in THE final. Take a local train from the airport to Cologne and exit at Köln Mülheim/Messe ( thats the station before reaching the main station - Hauptbahnhof). You will see the Arena right from the station and reach it in 3 min by foot. Entrance is free except for the drinks. But it will be crowded!

In any case you will find TVs, small or big, in nearly every place in the "Altstadt" (the tourist area between Cathedral - Rhein river and Heumarkt). Nothing is going on right next to the Cathedral (Domplatte)!

Enjoy the trip and the match!

Who died?
ulrich, you should explain what we Germans mean when we use this funny term. For the English speaking world it means that a casket with a dead body is exposed somewhere :-)

Re: World cup final?

Ingrid,

I know the meaning of "public viewing" in the original context. I used the term, as you can find it as well on the FIFA.com web page for events, where (many) people meet in public places to watch football commonly on huge screens.
OK?

Travel Tips for Cologne

The most useful thing in Cologne.

by Steve-H

And... it's only 4 euros for 24 hours.
What an excellent thing this is, meet Schliebfach Automat 8, my new best friend. Sometimes you find yourself in a city with time to spare but you can't have a walk around because you are weighed down with luggage, probably on route to the airport - problem solved!
At the main station in Cologne they have these wonderful automated machines for storing your luggage, you put your case/rucksack inside, insert 4 euros and wait. The door closes and your luggage is whisked away, a card is dispensed, keep this safe!
When you come back simply insert the card and the machine finds your luggage for you and away you go...brilliant!

Kölsch

by diocletianvs

Kölsch means lots of things, but two main meanings are local beer and local language.

I am not a beer expert but I guess you have to be local to appreciate this light, highly-fermented beer that comes in small glasses (Stange) and can be brewed only in local breweries according to the putity laws dating from 1516.

(To me, it tasted more like those syrup juices where you put a small amount of very sweet fruit juice and mix it with large amount of water - not like beer at all.)

But, as the local Kölsch saying says - Jeder Jeck is anders (Every fool is different), my appologies to all local Kölsch lovers: every person is different, and tastes differ as well.

When in Cologne, you definitely have to try Kölsch and decide for yourself.

MTC

MTC
This is a really cool club. It's in a basement. This weekend (24th Nov.) I was on a concert from Friday's Choice. This is a newcomer band from Cologne and they played good Rock.
In the MTC there are very often concerts from newcomer bands and other bands, also it is a disco and bar. It's not too small or too big. I liked the atmosphere.

If you love mussels, you'll love this

by soozie80 about ese bier

From the outside this place looks about average size. There is a small bar on the one side and a door and huge curtain leading to the restuarant area. Its long dark narrow room with big wooden benches for larger groups. You get the feeling you are sat in someones living room but its not cramped.
It does get wuite busy so be prepared for a wait but it will be worth it.
One thing I notices in Cologne was do not wait to be seated take your own seat or you will be waiting even longer.
It was on one of the main streets in Cologne but not a typical brewery pub for tourists a place where the locals go. There were lots of typical german food available, pigs knuckles potato dishes and fish and a huge menu for mussels which is what i had. The Mussels are only available from sept to feb as they are caught fresh each day and served the next day.
I had mussels in garlic and white wine which was served with lots of boiled onions and leeks, made a really tasty soup when i had eaten the mussles. It was a huge portion served with pumpernickel (rye bread) and cost about 12 euros. They also do jumbo sized portions so tuck in.

Kölner Dom

by Aitana

The Cologne cathedral was an important place of pilgrimage, as it is said that the relics of the Three Magi are kept here. In fact, the Shrine of the Three Kings, a large gilded sarcophagus, which is traditionally believed to hold the remains of the Three Wise Men, is one of the treasures of the cathedral.
The gothic cathedral began to be built in the 13th century. The towers were finished in 1880. For four years it was the highest building all over the world, until the Washington Monument and then the Eiffel Tower were completed.
