Visiting the Gothic Cathedral...

Visiting the Gothic Cathedral in Cologne just took my breath away! It is so immense and full of history. Learning that the allied forces during the second world war were told not to bomb this beautiful Cathedral and they didn't. But, they took all the stained glass out of the cathedral and put in in salt mines in Austria and due to the bombing around this beautiful cathedral, a lot of it was damaged and lots of it fell but has been repaired and when you go inside there are pictures of before and after and it's just amazing.
The Cathedral
by steventilly
Hahaha, no only kidding. This is probably the most famous sight in Cologne and to some people it's all that there is to see. Even Bill Bryson recommended walk out the station, look at the Cathedral, walk back into the station...
I think he's wrong, by the way.

By rail and car this city can be reached from all sides. The airport is located in the South, and shared with the former capitol of West Germany, Bonn. It can only be reached by road.
The most romantic way to get to Köln however is by boat over the Rhine river, which splits the city in two.
The city-center 'Die Altstadt' can be best explored on foot. Other parts can be easaly reached with busses and/or trams.
BEST OF CONTINENTAL FOOD

Hans Stube within the Excelsior Ernst Hotel is expensive but worth every Euro. It's a wonderful place for a celebration dinner or if you just want to splurge and enjoy first class food with excellent service. There were many fish dishes on the menu - also very good beef and lovely desserts.
In side the dom

This is the Dom, the great Gothic cathedral of Cologne, Germany.
It was started in 1248 and was the fifth building to be erected on the site. After that, the east chancel was consecrated in 1322. The first floor of the south tower was completed in 1395.
However, it was not until 1842 that the foundation of the extension of the cathedral was laid. On the 15th October 1880 the last stone of the south tower was laid, in the presence of Emperor William I. The work was completed after 632 years.
Damage was caused to the Cathedral by bombs in World War 2 necessitating repair work after the war.
Upon entering the cathedral we were immediately handed a brochure printed in German, English and French which read, in part: "We hope that in addition to enjoying your visit to our cathedral you will also find the time to meditate on your life and say some prayers ... Cologne Cathedral is a place of worship. We wish to preserve this dignity, and we would be grateful for your assistance ... For those seeking guidance private talks with a pastor can be arranged ..." The brochure included the cathedral's ambitious worship schedule (seven services per day every day except Saturday) and the hours when confessionals are open.
