The main selling point of Station Hostel is location, location & location! It is just a couple of minutes walk to Hauptbahnhof Station, Dom Cathedral and many other sites.
The lobby of the hostel is nice and the staff is very helpful with info/advice. The rooms were nothing to brag about. We had a double private room with shared bathroom. The room was VERY tiny but decent enough for a couple of nights. The bathrooms were kind of gross but use-able for a short stay.
Make sure to bring flip-flops to wear in the showers!!! Towels are not included so bring your own or pay to use theirs.
Unique Quality: The staff and location are the most appealing reasons to stay at Station Hostel. The price was also fair for the room.
Directions: Down the street from Hauptbahnhof and over a couple of streets.
The location is perfect, really easy to walk there from the main station even with a heavy backpack, as opposed to all official HI Hostels in Koln...and chepare than HI hostels as well! Plus it's really nice, has a really cool lounge, the staff is the nicest and most helpful ever, they can give you info on where to find anything you need and really help eith everything possible. Would you believe I forgot my mobile phone in the hostel and they actually mailed it to me in Berlin?
I found these three hostels promoting themselves at the local tourist office:
Station - Marzellenstrasse 40-48 - 50668 Köln, Tel: +49-221-9125301
Köln-Deutz - Siegesstr. 5 - 50679 Köln, Tel: +49-221-814711
Meiniger - Engelbertstr. 33-35 - 50674 Köln, Tel: +49-221-924090
Directions: Station: 1 block NW of the Hbf (Main Station)
Köln Deutz: At the East bank of the river Rhine; S-bahn Köln Deutz
Meiniger 4 blocks SW of Rudolphplatz (U-bahn)
We had an amazing time in Cologne and partly that was to do with this hostel and the fab people that we met whilst here!
There are two Station hostels in Cologne, the one that I stayed in is not the one with the popular Station Bar...its the one located on Marzellenstrasse.
Its a funky hostel and very popular, its clean with plenty of shower rooms, a well equipped kitchen, great staff with local knowledge, a lounge area, and the downstairs reception area come bar!
The hostel is extremely central, right near the Hauptbahnhof and a 5 minute walk from the Dom area.
Unique Quality: On our first night in Cologne we stayed in a 5 bed dorm which cost 15euro per person - this was a bargain! The beds were comfy and the rooms spacious.
On our second night here we stayed in a 2bed room, the cost for this was 40euro and was just as comfortable as the dorm - it just offered some added privacy.
I did manage to see one of the double rooms with private bathrooms...these were much more luxurious and when I visit Cologne again I definatly take this option!
Excellent place to stay, minutes from the Dom and Railway station,
Clean rooms, fresh bedding, spotless toilets/showers
Friendly and approachable staff.
I would stay here every time. Just wish more hostels were as good and cheap!
Unique Quality: Good kitchen, lockers and free storage
Directions: Follow exit signs "DOM" from Hbf railway station, left and easy to find, opposite the Hilton!
At the "Station Hotel" that is very close to the trainstation you can get a cheap room! EUR 15,- per night.
Unique Quality: You can internet for free here and watch the telly if you like. Most of the times you will have to share you bedroom with others, also you have to share the shower & toilet.
The accomdation is very clean, the staff is friendly.
Directions: Station Area
This is a nice and friendly hostel located in the heart of cologne. It's about a 2 minute walk to the train station.
Unique Quality: No curfew, free lockers and internet.
This is a special hostel!
As many VT'rs recomend this place I went there.
Here you have a friendly ambience and you can sleep at an affordable price. At the entrance it is ameeting room where you have internet, infos and coffee...
Unique Quality: 1.You have a community feeling. Strange but here you don't feel isolated of other human beings, like you can feel in other expensive hotels, .
2. You have internet, meanwhile in other more expensive hotels don't offer it.
3. My conclusion: something is wrong in hotels managing.
Directions: PERFECT: Close to the Dom and the Train Station
In front of the Hilton Cologne (opened 3.02)
around 16 Euros for bed and blankets, depends on how many beds are in the room....
Unique Quality: Central and clean! Rooms are simple but the beds are comfortable and the flair is very international.
Little lockers for rent!
There is another station hostel in the old town. It has a pub inside, so it might is a bit loud! Didn´t stayed there though!
Directions: It´s right next to the central station, a five minutes walk, so it´s perfect for backpackers!!
A bed is around 15 Euros for a night. The price of course depends on how many beds there are in the room.
Unique Quality: Friendly staff, nice colourful rooms, great beds (no bunk beds!!), great atmosphere.
If you get a room facing the backyard you can watch the people on the station platform... and in the morning you wake up from the announcements made on the station. Did I mention the very central location? ;-)
Directions: Marzellenstrasse 44-48 , 50668 Köln
(really close to the central railway station and the cathedral)

too me it was a disappointing experience: I had a room next to the washing rooms and could smell the toilets all the time
