Nice café/cake place?

by yumyum

Hi everyone,

I've been several times to Cologne and am due for another (shopping)stopover for a few hours this coming Thursday. Has anyone ever been to a lovely café with cakes (snacks)? Preferably near the the main shoppng streets? Ususally, each city has a famous place or two.

I've checked many tips but most are about Brauhauses, Chinese restaurants, ice cream parlours etc.

Looking forward to your input!

Thanks,

Sonja

You could try Café Reichard; http://www.cafe-reichard.de/ Search for Köln konditorei on Google maps and you will find it on the map as well. It's hard to miss, right by the cathedral.

The ice cream parlours (i.e. Eiscafes) obviously mainly have ice cream, but most will have alternatives for those who don't enjoy ice cream all that much in winter.

True.

However, I think there is no better area for whatever than Martinswinkel with its colourful houses and the views of the Rhine...

Travel Tips for Cologne

Köln as an important Roman glass production centre

by Niekie

In Roman times Colonia Agrippinensis, as Cologne was then called, was the most important glass production centre in the Western Roman Empire. Because they employed the newest glassblowing techniques, the Cologne glass workshops were able to mass-produce all kinds of glass products, making it also available to the lower classes. But glass products from the Eastern Roman Empire, with its elaborate forms and colors, remained very popular with the fashionable upper class. However, instead of just copying the Eastern designs, the workshops in Cologne came up with their own distinct styles and shapes. There was one particular technique in which the workshops had reached perfection and developed their own style in, so called diatret glass. Diatret glass from Cologne would usually comprise a colorless glass cup, set in a cage of brightly colored strands of glass; the cup in the picture being an excellent example. You can see this cup, belonging to a large collection of antique glass artifacts, in the Römisch-Germanisches Museum.

About Cologne beer (Kölsch)

by sabsi

Well, it's served in small glasses and you need at least a hundred of them to get drunk. But before that happens you have had 20 litres so you can't drink anymore ;-) Be careful with the glasses and your nose!!

Good food for small price

by 50939 about Borsalino

Of course it is not a 3-Star-Restaurant.

But the food taste good. They offer not only Pizza, Pasta and Salad. You can order a steak too.

I don't know any restaurant in Cologne, where you get better food for less than 7,00 Euro. The Sunday Brunch is very good.

They have a buffet with all you like. Fruits, salmon, meat ....

The price of 8,90 Euro (with one cup of coffee or cocoa) is very moderate

Kölner Dom

by rochellevm

Cologne Cathedral is one of the best known architectural monuments in Germany and the 2nd tallest Gothic architecture in the world. It also took 632 years to complete after the construction began in 1248 due to interruptions.

Tourists are allowed to get in, however, they should be wearing decent attire (no shorts, sleeveless shirts). Inside, take a look at the arch, the isle and the glass details. You can also take a few pictures inside.
